the priviledge of giv in g our new canary a nam e. W e
nam ed it “ P rogress 2 3 .” H e is not able to sing yet
alth o u gh he m akes a great deal of noise. B ut tru e to
his nam e we know he will P rogress and will soon sing.

recently been received at th e lib rary ; th e illu stratio n s
by L ouis Rliead and F ran k E . Schoonover m ake it es
pecially attractiv e. W illiam Dean How ell w rites of
the book: “ I t is not often th at in later years one
finds any book as good as one rem em bers it from
o n e’s y o u th ; b u t it has been my in te re stin g experience

W ed n esd ay . It proved a success all th e w a y th ro u g h .
T h e dom estic science girls were very busy S atu rd ay
p rep arin g lig h t refresh m en ts for the S oph o m o res’ a n
nual p arty .
T h e eig h th grade girls detailed w ith the ju n io rs are
doing good w ork and i t ’s som ew hat of a race to see
w hich can do the best. I t ’s safe to say the sopho
m ores are m aking a splendid record and will not be
left in the rear. T h ey are aw ake to th e fact th a t it
takes w ork and plenty of it to reach th e goal.
W e have eight new girls in the ju n io r class th is year
and they m ust be aw are of th e fact ere this th a t th e re ’s
m uch to be learned. I t ’s not easy to enter th e a d
vanced classes at C hem aw a, for it m eans good solid
w ork or fail. W e are hoping all will go th ro u g h w ith
good g ra d e s —seniors, ju n io rs, sophom ores and fre sh
m en.

T h o u g h our grapplers did not carry off all the honors
in th e w restling to u rn am e n t held last F riday evening
at O regon C ity ag ain st the O regon City team , they are
justified in feeling proud of the fine show ing made
against the O regon C ity cham pions w ho still have a
clean slate after m any m atches th ro u g h o u t the state
and who are so good th a t they practically an n ih ilated
the state university freshm en in a m atch.
C aptain H aw k , our best m an, was overw eight in the
class in w hich he was to appear, 145 pounds, and did
not com pete. T h e m atch between Ja rre t of O regon
City and D onneley of Chem aw a, 125 pounds, was a
th riller. E ach secured one decision, w’hich leaves
them a draw . N ew ton of O regon C ity and P etellin of
Chem aw a, 135 pounds, p u t up a w onderful battle, N ew
ton w in ning by a scratch . Crim of Chem aw a won two
straig h t falls from C urrey.
A retu rn m atch is being arranged and Coach W hite
and his team believe they can em erge w inners.
T h e Ju n io r and Sophom ore girls served a very ap p e
tizing b an q u et to th e g irls’ and b o y s’ basketball team s
last T h u rsd ay .
T h e C lim bers’ Club elected three new bo vs to m em
bership last week. A fter a short business m eeting
the rem ainder of th e hour was spent in gam es.
C arrie A nderson, A nna Lee T h o m as and L ouise
G ard ip e received the highest grades in th e dom estic
science for th is period.
M r. Paul G reene was leader for the Y .M .C .A . m eet
in g last S unday n ig h t, and the discussion topic was.
“ Sonic th in g s I believe, and w h y .” A lth o u g h sever
al of the boys to w hom topics were assigned were not
present, excellent im prom ptu speeches w ere made and
th e m eeting was a profitable one. A fter the program
some tim e was sp en t in discussing plans for the pay
“ m ovie” w hich is to be given by the Y .M .C .A . and
C lim bers’ C lub this w eek, and also the program for
the final m eeting of th e Y .M . Mission S tudy class.
Cecilia S m ith and O ka P au lin a, seniors, and L avina
K ross, a fresh m an , are cooks for the w eek. W e are
ex p ectin g som e good m eals from these cooks.
