B lacksm iths recently dism antled the farm tractor
and made it ready for reboring cylinders and fitting
new pistons. Some good w rought iron w ork has been
done by the boys of th is d ep artm en t.
T he tendency of boys in the m echanical d ep artm en ts
to neglect tools should be corrected. W hen you have
tools to use see th a t they are retu rn ed to the shop in
good condition. A w orkm an is judged by the a p p e a r
ance of his tools an d the care he takes of th em . A
careless m an always has poor tools and th a t k ind of a
man m akes a poor w orkm an. No one w ants to pay
him good m oney and he can n o t hold a job. T h in k it
over.
ACADEMIC NOTES
T h e m id-year ex am in atio n s which were to have been
given Ja n . 22, according to a recent annou n cem en t in
th e A m erican, took place Ja n . 29 as scheduled by the
Chief S upervisor of E du catio n . T h e an n o u n cem en t
was m ade before th e schedule from the Office had been
received.
Miss F lorence K elly from P ittsb u rg , P a., reported
for d u ty on Jan . 24. Miss K elly is an experienced
teacher, having ta u g h t in schools in the U nited S tates
and also in P orto R ico. She will relieve Mrs. Black
wood, who has had the first grade. W e reg ret to lose
M rs. Blackwood as a m em ber of the school faculty.
S tate diplom as, e n titlin g them to en ter any h igh
school in th e state of O regon, were presented to A nna
L ee T hom as and R obert P eratrovich in assem bly
W ednesday afternoon. In view of th e fact th a t about
50 percent of th e stu d en ts from the public schools of
M arion co u n ty who took th e ex am in atio n failed to
to pass, A n n a Lee and Robert are to be co n g ratu lated
on th eir p rep aratio n for th e test. In May stu d e n ts
of the eig h th grade may take the state ex am in atio n s
in all subjects, th e seventh grade may take g eo g rap h y ,
and the six th grade physiology.
W ith the b eg in n in g of a new sem ester there will be
the usual change in the seating of stu d en ts in th e
school assem bly. T h e letter m en, and th e girls w ho
have earned letters, and th e senior class will occupy
the section usually assigned to them ; th e little folks
will give up th e ir favored seats in the fro n t row and
occupy seats in th e rear of th e room . T h e program
will also be changed, th e stu d e n ts no longer having th e
privilege of electing teachers for a five-m inute talk .
T h is has been one of th e features of the school assem
bly m ost enjoyed by th e stu d e n ts.
M rs. Blackwood read a little story to th e stu d e n t
body on W ednesday m orn in g en titled , “ A C heap G ir l;”
A lbert O rseu asked num erous questions on c u rre n t
events, followed by an in tellig en t discussion of each
question. T h e afternoon division had the pleasure of
h earing Mrs. T u rn e y give a beautiful solo on th e
piano, “ N o c tu rn e ” by C hopin, and in response to an
encore Mrs. T u rn e y d elig h ted both pupils and teachers
w ith a second solo.

Carney F ren ch m ight som e day surprise you w ith a
solo, as he possesses a w onderful bass voice.
We senior girls are now com pleting our hats. T h e y
all seem to become us, too. W e guess we will pass as
m illiners after all.
Roy Cotirville, one of ou r m ost honorable class
mates, was absent from school for a day or tw o and we
missed him g re a tly .
We are glad to know th a t nearly every m em ber of
our class has had a chance to give a recitation d u rin g
some Sunday evening in chapel.
F ran k John so n , form erly em ployed in th e pow er
house, is now w orking in the ice p lant w here he is
progressing rap id ly in the art of draw in g ice.
Oka P aulina was the second girl to finish her hat in
the Domestic A rt D epartm ent. T he reporter is try in g
to th in k who the first girl is. M aybe E rm a La C lair—
who knows?
Now for a little sad news: T he class of ’23 has
only 15 honorable m em bers. But nevertheless we
will still progress in spite of it all. So the new s is not
so very sad after all.
Did any of you hear a lot of canaries sin g in g th e
other day? T h ey were th e senior class over in th e
m usic room try in g J out th eir voices. M rs. T u rn e y
found one or tw o who could sing and they m ay ap p ear
before the public soon.
