interior of the stu d e n ts’ big d in in g hall.

consisting of an air ta n k , pum p and m otor
M r. Sw oboda, who has been in bad health recen tly ,
is back on th e job ag ain , we are pleased to rep o rt.
T h e m achinists are m ak in g all sorts of contrivances
now , from large gears dow n to “ b lack h ead ” rem overs.
An ex tra basket w hich has been installed in the gym
m akes it possible to keep th ree g ro u p s p racticin g
basket-sh o o tin g at th e sam e tim e.
T h e engineers, electricians and o th er m echanics
have all enjoyed having “ a h an d in th in g s ” at th e
la u n d ry d u rin g the p ast w eek.
T h e blacksm iths, under the direction of Mr. W elsh,
are giving the farm trac to r a th o ro u g h ov erh au lin g
preparatory to th e b eg in n in g of th e sp rin g work.
Some body sen t to Salem to have a certain kind of a
key m ade. W ord cam e back th a t the assignm ent was
im possible. T h en a C hem aw a boy, Jo h n L ong, made
the key in our own shop.
T h e bakers have a sort of bread tru c k now . T hey
planned it and th e carp en ters m ade it. A pie w agon
is u n d er co n sid eratio n . T h e y are to be used in
delivering from th e bakery to th e d in in g hall.
Com pany “ C ” of th e boys’ battalion, in w hich th ere
are 100 boys, is all rigged out in brand new w inter
green uniform s. I t is needless to say th a t they are
proud of them and th a t the su its will be well taken
care of.
O n last F rid ay evening the orchestra assisted at the
N o rth H ow ell school d istric t P aren t-T each ers’ m eeting.
T h is d istrict is a live-w ire organization and is d o in g
splendid w ork. I t was a profitable evening for all.
T h e orchestra was in special favor.
D urin g th e past few d ay s Mr. S anders and his force
of p ain ters have made a g reat im provem ent in th e ap
pearance of old Brewer H all and the Small Boys H om e.
A fter th e rain y and m uddy w eather several places were
to u ch ed up w ith p ain t w here soap and w ater w ould
have no effect.
C hapel exercises last Sunday evening seem ed of
m ore th a n th e u n u su al in terest. T h e orchestra played
a “ C aprice” by Rolfe, H erscliel Crim sang “ Pale
M oon” by L ogan, R obert Johnson recited G o ld sm ith ’s
“ E legy on the D eath of a Mad D o g ,” th e choir sang
“ T h e H eavens P roclaim ” by Beethoven, and S u p t.
H all concluded th e program w ith a talk on “ D iscip
lin e ,” w hich m ust have been in stru ctiv e to all as well
as in terestin g , for th e subject was treated both u n iq u e
ly and ablV- T h is was one of S u p t. H a ll’s best
talks, and considering his m any fine talks of th e past,
favorable com parison is stro n g endorsem ent. I t was
fine.
O ur g irls’ basketball team will jo u rn ey to W ood
burn on S atu rd ay w here they will play th e high school
g irls ’ team . T h is will be th eir second gam e th is

season and w hile we are not co u n tin g on an easy vic
tory, from com parative scores, we figure th a t our
girls should bring hom e the bacon.
Now th a t half-w ay decent w eather has set in the
boys of th e upper classes are to be seen on th e race
track lim bering up for th e sp rin g class m eets. In all
probability the try -o u ts will be held in som ew hat d if
ferent m anner th a n has been followed in the past few
years to select our track m en. I t is planned to have
a series of class track m eets and from them choose
our school representatives.
T h e N onpareils and invited guests enjoyed their
annual party in th e gym last S atu rd ay evening. It
was a m ost delightful affair in every way. M r. B en t’s
orchestra provided fine m usic, a w histling contest
afforded m uch m errim ent, th ere was an en tertain in g
in tro d u cto ry program , and refreshm ents of a d ain ty
ch aracter were served under the supervision of M rs.
B rickell. T h e gym was beautifully decorated. It was
an affair w hich will long be rem em bered by those in

S unday evening Mr. K irk spoke to the Y . M. C .A .
on a very tim ely and practical topic. H e urged the
boys to see the best in others, to have faith in their
friends, and th eir organization, and to live up to their
ideals. H is talk was m uch enjoyed oy all present.
T h e Y . M C. A . is conducting a very successful
m ission stu d y class at present, u n d er the able leader
ship of M r. Floyd R eynolds of W illam ette U niversity.
T h ey are stu d y in g “ In d ia on th e M arch .” F ran k
Jo h n so n is chairm an of th e m issionary com m ittee and
has enrolled about tw enty boys in the class.
L ast T h u rsd ay evening the L . L . L. ch ap ter of the
Y. W . C. A. was hostess to th e C lim bers’ C lub at a
very delig h tfu l party in th e gym . An interesting
program was given, followed by a variety of jolly
gam es
U ndoubtedly the best p art of th e p arty was
the “ e a ts ,” w hich had been prepared by th e girls,
w ith the assistance of M rs. Brew er. Mr. and M rs.
Mason and Mrs. Brew er were guests of the two clubs
for th e evening.
S unday seemed to be “ E m ployees’ D ay” with th e
Y . M. and Y. W . C. A. Mr. Iliff gave a most in
terestin g address to the girls at th eir m eeting in the
afternoon. H e chose for his them e the story of
E sth er, and made a stro n g application of the question,
“ W ho know s w hether thou art come to the kingdom
for such a tim e as this?” Special m usic for th e afte r
noon was a d u et, “ W hispering H o p e ,” sung by Lucy
V erney and E va M a rtin .____
HOT-SHOTS DEFEAT W. V. F R E SH M E N
T h e H otshots surprised everybody last T uesday when
they cut loose and defeated the F reshm en of W illam ette
U niversity 29 to 5.
W e can tru th fu lly say th at it was a fast and in te re st
in g contest and we cannot rem em ber w hen we have seen
the spectators laugh and enjoy them selves m ore than
they did at th is gam e.
Team work was not am iss on eith er side, alth o u g h
our boys held th e cat by th e tail w hen it came to shoot
ing baskets. Brendible, w ith 14 points to his cred it,
and N orw est with 11, were our h igh-point m en, w hile
S hepard, Pliinny and K eiser scored one basket apiece.
