S tu d en ts, it is the resolute you n g person w hom you
cannot keep from doing w hat he u n d ertak es who gets
th e big averages in school. H ave you noticed th at
w eaklings are alw ays arm ed w ith excuses; how they
allow them selves to be pushed out of th e w ay, an d are
practically sent to th e trash pile? T h ey have no b a c k
bone, no fight, in them ; no definite purpose, no goal
in view, and they get now here. No person ever de
velops his possibilities who is afraid to tackle th in g s,
big or little. N early ev ery th in g of im portance th a t
has been done in the history of the world has at first
appeared im possible. W e develop only th ro u g h self
effort— nobody d rifts into a n y th in g desirable. T o get
th e th in g w orth w hile you m ust m ake stra ig h t for it.
T o succeed in y o u r effort to prepare yourselves for a
life career w hile at C hem aw a we urge all of you s tu
den ts to fling yourselves into the task w ith u n flin ch in g
d eterm in atio n , being w illing to buy success w ith in
d u stry and perseverance for such is th e price d em an d
ed for success. In a w ord, y o u n g people, use your
stay in g pow ers—stick .
SENIOR NOTES
T h e long-looked-for 1923 has at last arrived for the
class of *23.
T h e seniors are glad th a t school has begun ag ain .
All know th a t tim e flies and they h a v e n ’t very long to
rem ain at Chem aw a.
Tw o m em bers n eeding honorable m ention are C arrie
A nderson and Roy C ourville who took part in the
S unday n ig h t p ageant on C h ristm as E ve.
T h e senior girls are now ta k in g up m illinery w ith
M rs. Canfield. T h ey are very m uch interested in it
and hope to become great m illiners some day soon.
In the gam e betw een the Seniors and “ S o p h ie s,”
th e class of ’23 discovered a new star player, A ddie
M errill, who lived u p to her title by m ak in g th e last
basket before th e pistol made its loud rep o rt.
Did you know th at th e ju n io rs could cook good, a p
petizing meals? W e seniors su rely know it and wish
to th a n k the ju n io rs very m uch for the splendid N ew
Y ea r’s din n er w hich th ey gave in our honor.
A report came in th a t the h em stitch er in the sew ing
room was not in good w orking order so some w ork
m en w ent up to fix it. Said w orkm en being A lex
Beauvais, Roy C ourville, F ra n k Johnson and th eir
honorable in stru cto r.
O n N ew Y e a r’s n ig h t a great racket arose in M itch
ell H all. W ere th e senior boys in it? W ell, we
should say not.
T h ey were asleep, dream ing of
school and geom etry (R ep o rter did not m ake any
N ew Y ea r’s resolution to tell the tr u th ) .
It seem s th a t d u rin g the holidays th ere were three
m em bers of the class of ’23 who took it on them selves
to g et in to ev ery th in g . Jo h n Pesterkoff, F ra n k J o h n
son and R obert Johnson were typical looking shepherds
in th e “ H oly N ig h t.” Said th ree being again b ro u g h t
fo rth to th e p u b lic’s eye in th e g ran d spelling m atch.
Now we hear Jo h n P esterkoff and F ra n k Jo h n so n are
p racticing w ith th e school choir. S eniors are every
w here.
ITEMS FROM THE TRADES
Some excellent w ork in w ro u g h t iron is now in
progress at the b lack sm ith in g d ep a rtm en t.
T h e m asons have repaired plaster in the school b u ild
ing and at M r. H a u se r’s q u arte rs and are at present
engaged in replacing tile rem oved from the oil line.
T h e boys of the tailor shop are w ithout an in s tru c t
or tem porarily. T h is does not seem to m ake any
difference w ith the detail rep o rtin g and w orking.
T hey rep o rt business as u su al.
T h e pain ters co n tin u e to freshen up room s, halls,
fu rn itu re and w hatever else is in need of it. If you
doubt this, or if you feel th e need of freshening, ju s t
apply to th e m .
W hile the w eather is bad and o th e r w ork not press-
in g th e tru ck crew have started to dism antel the old
pow er p la n t. C onsiderable p ip in g has been reclaim ed
and m ore is to follow. T h is crew recently repaired
th e bed on th e big tru c k and renew ed th e floor.
T h e carp en ters are rem odeling th e hen house used
form erly by the D om estic Science for use as an in c u
bator house. A no th er brooder house will also be
built w ithin a short tim e; at p resent all m aterials have
not been delivered. F loors are being repaired at M itch
ell H all, roofs in various places atten d ed to and
other rep airs too num erous to m ention are receiving
atten tio n .
T h e season of decision on dem onstration problem s
is b earing fru it. Boys in the vocational departm en ts
m ust w ork out dem onstration problem s for dem on
stratio n w eek. T h in k w hat is to be and consult your
in stru c to r. T he place to begin to get the m ost from
your w ork is to be on tim e when th e w ork w histle
blows. T he fellow th a t com es loafing in even a few
m in u tes late is losing o p p o rtu n ity for him self and
m aking a d rag on the d epartm ent. Sooner or later he
becomes so m uch “ balla«t” th at he will have to be
throw n out if th e d ep a rtm en t is to rise.
