Tw elve new pupils were enrolled in the academ ic d e
p artm e n t F rid ay . E leven of these are from A laska,
th re e of the boys are from P etersb u rg , w here as the
boys plaintively expressed it, “ N atives are not allowed
to attend public sc h o o l.”
T he T h an k sg iv in g en tertain m en t was given th is year
by pupils of the low er grades and th eir efforts were
appreciated by all present. It is very hard for some
of th e younger pupils to appear on the stage, but the
experience is good for th em — a valuable p art of their
school w ork.

to the fact th at our busy S u p erin ten d en t took tim e to
have a personal interview w ith each stu d e n t in this
d ep artm en t who had failed to m ake a passing grade for
th e last period. H is interest in th e progress of each
pupil, his determ ination to remove every obstacle from
the p ath s of those boys and girls who w ant to stu d y ,
his urge for greater effort, m ade a deep and lasting
im pression on the m ind of each child who had this
interview .

T h e R eliance L iterary Society held th e ir open session
on M onday evening. W e have not the space neces
sary to w rite up th eir “ sh o w ” in detail, but suffice it
to say th a t th e boys did well and succeeded adm irably
in e n te rta in in g all present. T h e o th er societies were
out in full force and su p p o rted the R eliance boys w ith
society songs and yells th a t were clever and e n te rta in
ing.
Miss McDowell gave one of her splendid talk s to the
pupils in assem bly last W ednesday. A fter recitin g a
sh o rt poem th at convinced us of the value of each and
every m inute, Miss McDowell gave a brief talk th at
was a pleasure and benefit to all present. A nna Lee

in cu rren t history th at called for real inform ation if
one hoped to give an answ er.
T h e beautiful golden oak ex h ib it cases th a t were
presented to th e school by the class of ’22 have been
placed in the fro n t hall of the academ ic b u ild in g . T he
school ex h ib it will be placed in th e new cases as soon
as some m in o r ad ju stm en ts are made in the doors.
T h e old cases were moved to the back hall w ith the
ex h ib it in tact. E ach day stu d e n ts linger to look over
th e w ork of the various classes; the new cases give
m ore space to ex h ib it such w ork, they are valued, too,
because they were m ade by th e boys of last y e a r ’s
g ra d u a tin g class.
T hose who w ould be well inform ed on c u rre n t events
w ithout ta k in g tim e to glean such inform ation from
th e daily papers m ight have profited by h earin g the
recitations in th e Senior room at cu rren t event period
last F riday
E very topic was covered from the latest
news in radio to the most recent happenings over seas.
W ith o u t a nam e being called for recitation each s tu
d en t rose, cam e to th e front of th e room , discussed his
topic, w hich, of course, was of his own choosing, then,
if he w ished, took an o th er topic and covered th at sub-
je c t fully. T h ere was not one, “ I d o n ’t k n o w ,” nor
one m o m en t’s hesitation in the en tire recitatio n period.

Last F rid ay evening chronicled an event w hich will
long be rem em bered at C hem aw a. W e were given a
com plim entary concert by the C ardin -L ieu ran ce O r
chestra and Q u artet, and th e com pany is headed by
F red C ardin, who left C hem aw a some five or six years
ago as th e first violinist of th e In d ian S trin g Q u artet
w hich toured the E ast w ith pronounced success u n til
the war d raft disru p ted th e organization
W illiam
Reddie, who w is th e cellist of the q u a rte t, is th e c e ll-
ist of the com pany of artists who favored us last F rid a y
evening. Both are featured on th e present to u r as
soloists and it is needless to state th at they are high-
class in th eir a r t— their w ork proves it.
T he com pany is com prised of three ladies and three
gentlem en, all nice, clean, serious-m inded and lovable
folk in m any ways an unusual com pany.
Miss
G oodding, vocalist, is th e th ird soloist, and her art
charm ed all. She, too, is very clever. All in all, it
is in unusually w ell-balanced and stro n g com pany.
Mr. C ardin spoke feelingly of his love for th e old
school, of th e appreciation of both him self and Mr.
R eddie for w hat the school and the people at Chem aw a
had done for them . H e m ade a good talk.
It is not possible in ou r lim ited space to say all we
would wish, but suffice it to say th a t at th e close of
th e concert S upt. H all m ade a rousing good talk, in
dorsing the work of the evening and em phasizing th e
pride we all felt in the retu rn of “ O ur B oys.” At the
conclusion of his rem arks he presented F red and
W illie w ith block Cs, ” an insignia of ran k at C he
m aw a and the highest honor we can confer. E very
member of the com pany he also presented w ith floral
trib u tes. T hen followed ’rahs for all by the stu d en t
body— it was good to yell.
S upt. and Mrs. H all did ev ery th in g in th eir power
to en tertain the com pany w hile here and th e rem arks
o f the artists on th eir d ep artu re was testim ony a-plenty
that they succeeded adm irably, for all went th eir way
voicing love for Chem aw a and her people— all were
Chem awa boosters.

Three of the th irteen delegates to go to th e Y .M .C .A .
conference at E ugene were high school boys.
The H igh School stu d e n ts enjoyed a w hole w eek’s
vacation. T hey are now w orking harder than ever.
