us of the class of ’19 and th e ir mascot song about th e

In botany class we are d raw ing th e p arts of a p u m p
k in . W e are g ettin g ready for N ov. 30, w hen we hope
to draw the pum pkin pie.
F ran k Johnson again leads in class sta n d in g for the
period. G eorge P h in n ey , follows, w ith E rm a L aC lair
and O ka P au lin a tied for th ird place.
It looks as if our senior fam ily had reached its m a x
im um . F or it is said th at N ov. 1 is the latest d ate a
pupil may en ter and expect to g rad u ate.
W e senior girls reg retted leaving the Dom estic Sci
ence, but after a d a y ’s work in the sew ing room , we
decided th at it w asn ’t so bad after all.
F ran k Johnson, o u r class engineer, has learned how
to fire the new oil b u rn ers at th e pow er-house. You
o u g h t to see him m ake those boilers p u rr; ju st like a
k itte n — a large k itten .
If the lil’ old Ford begins to get stu b b o rn and w o n ’t

O ne day at the D om estic Science tw o senior girls
cam e ru sh in g into th e dining-room to see the bird they
heard sin g in g . But it was only O ka P au lin a leaning
over the fish-bowl w h istlin g to the fish. “ D on’t tease
th e gold fish. O k a .”
T h e seniors have acquired the art of d escrib in g a n y
th in g from an over-grow n w hite elephant to a lonely
little m ouse. But since we have learned enough of
th a t, n arratio n is th e n ex t th in g on th e program .

M r. T u rn e r, our farm er, is on leave a t present and
M r. W oodard is d irec tin g th e w ork.
T h e m asons are com pleting the m anholes th at are
necessary for the recently laid h eatin g m ains.
T h e carpenters have recently com pleted a num ber of
stu d y tables for M cBride H all. T h e fact is th e car
penters are always m aking som ething, an d it is not all
noise eith er.
T h e coffee mill for the stu d e n ts’ kitchen has also
been o verhauled by th e m achinists and a new d riv in g
m echanism has been connected w ith it. It is a p ro
nounced success.
T h e farm detail is m oving the fence w est of the
pow er p lant to m ake a p astu re for the horses. T h e
farm boys tu rn ed to w ith a rig h t good will and helped us
unload a car of wood recently. W e appreciate th eir
prom pt efficient service.
T h e hack saw th a t was u n d e r construction by the
m achinists was tried out th e other day and proved to
be a success. T hey state, how ever, th a t they have
decided on some im provem ents w hich will be em bodied
in the n ex t model w hich will be in evidence before a
g reat w hile.
T h e plum bers and engineers are w orking day and
n ig h t to keep us w arm and com fortable. If there
should be some delay in th e ir answ er to your requests
please rem em ber th a t C hem aw a is a big place and there
are m any th in g s to see to and th a t they will get to
yo u r w ants ju st as qu ick ly as possible.
T h e blacksm iths and au to m echanics recently th o r
o u g h ly ovei hauled our Fageol tru ck and th e crew have
given the chassis some p a in t. T h e carp en ters added
th e ir bit to help out in re p a irin g the top and p u ttin g
on th e w indshield. T h e resu lt is a b etter appearance,
b etter perform ance and a b etter and m ore com fortable
operation for the driv er and crew .
ACADEMIC NOTES
T h e T h an k sg iv in g en te rta in m e n t will be given on
W ednesday evening, N ovem ber 29, in the au d ito riu m .
T h e open session of the R eliance L iterary Society
will be held in the auditorum D ecem ber 1, instead of
N ovem ber 24, as scheduled in the calendar.
T h is week three new pupils joined our stu d en t body
of m ore than seven hundred stu d en ts. A ngelo K n ig h t,
w ho was in th e arm y d u rin g the W orld W a r, en tered
th e fourth grade. Am y P ete and G oldie W ainaniw it
classified fifth.
A t our school assem bly last W ednesday m orning
Miss Lam b gave a splendid illu stratio n of the stre n g th
of ch aracter, m ind, and body th a t tru e education de
velops. Miss McDowell was chosen for a five-m inute
talk for n ex t W ednesday. R obert Johnson asked th e
stu d e n ts five questions on cu rren t events. T h e s u r
prise came when th e boys sp ran g to th eir feet, som e
tim es two at th e sam e in sta n t, w ith ready answ ers.
A ddie M errill was elected to propound puzzling q u es
tions on c u rre n t history at n ex t assem bly.
In the afternoon session Miss C onnolly favored the
stu d e n ts w ith the first poem to be recited in assem bly
th is year. H arry F ro st asked five questions on c u r
re n t events. A lthough the q u estio n s were such as
could be answ ered by those only who are well in fo rm
ed on c u rre n t history the stu d e n ts were quick w ith
th eir answ ers until he asked the last one, “ W hat is
one of the main item s in the platform of the new I n
dependent p arty ?” H arry had to answ er th a t him self.
