T h e Chem aw a stu d en ts at Salem H ig h are rep o rtin g
“ All is w ell.” T h eir happy faces proclaim th e m es
sage even before th eir lips have spoken it. G rades of
1 or 2 in tests require close application to studies, but
the boys and girls th in k th e rew ard is com m ensurate.
S eattle and are sta rrin g on th e football team . C larence
has made q u ite an ath letic record at B roadw ay and was
elected captain of this y e a r’s track team .
Irv in g S hepard, class of ’16, sta r center on one of
th e best basketball team s C hem aw a ever produced, is
now p u ttin g in his second year at W illam ette U n iv er
sity . “ S h ep ” won his letter as first basem an on the
varsity baseball team at W . U . last sp rin g .
T h e carpenters and p ain ters have finished th eir work
in room 10. T h is is now one of the best classroom s in
our academ ic b u ild in g , th e freshly painted walls, con-
venient arrangem ent for ventilation and lig h t m ake it
a very attractiv e room . Miss C onnolly and her classes
are now occupying the room . T he p ain tin g crew of
boys deserve special m ention for cleaning the glass in
th e large steel sash. I t was no small task , and the boys
left the glass sh in in g .
O ne of the delig h tfu l th in g s in connection w ith Mr.
C oon's visit to C hem aw a was his addresses to the
school assemblies on W ednesday. In a brief talk he
gave to the teachers and pupils glim pses of w hat is
being done at other schools he visits, and in each d i
vision he told the story of the A, B, C, he found w rit
ten in the sidew alks of a certain city w hich, he learned,
th e citizens in terp reted to m ean, “ A lw ays Be C a re fu l.”
T h e story was so well told th a t it m ade a profound im
pression and th e slogan A, B, C, is frequently h ea rd
in th e classroom s.

football squad.
Leroy N uckolls, class of ’21, is a senior at the Chico
hig h school th is year.
“ N u c k s” is sta rrin g in all
branches of athletics there.
F red W ilder, honor stu d e n t and w inner of the “ A lbert
p riz e ” at th e Salem h igh school last year, expects to
e n te r S tan fo rd U niversity n e x t sem ester.
T h e engineers prom ise to have our new pow er plant
under steam on S unday n e x t. T h a t is welcome news
to all of us.

Jack was
o u r main stay in th e cen ter position on our football
team w hile in school here and ’ was hard to beat.
A fter leaving here he attended th e Chico high school.
E leanor H a u k , class of ’19, who was a m em ber of
our teaching force last year, and F ra n k Johnson, class
of ’12, are now atten d in g the U niversity of O regon at
E u g en e. F ra n k , who was com pelled to disco n tin u e
his w ork at th e U niversity th ree years ago on account
of illness, is now in his ju n io r year.
T h e dairy crew are p rep arin g more p astu re land and
will soon have another piece of g ro u n d fenced on th e
lake for the p astu rag e of y o u n g stock. W e have some
excellent young stock th a t is com ing on.
T h e rain has held back th e potato harvest, but we
hope to get the rem ainder of th e crop out sh o rtly .
W e are fortunate in having “ h ea p s” of p u m p k in s.
T ak e a look down in the garden and you will see them .
T h e new cem ent porch at the Sm all B oys’ H om e is
m oving forw ard to com pletion. T h is is a m uch n eed
ed im provem ent and will add to both appearance and
com fort. In addition to the porch th ere is to be a co n
crete pavem ent around the bu ild in g also. T h e w alks
th a t have been replaced and other w alks repaired have
added greatly to the convenience and utility of C h em
awa. T h e plum bers are at present installin g the p lu m b
ing fixtures in th e new cottage recently com pleted.
T h is d ep artm en t is deserving of a great deal of credit
for the large am ount of good w ork accom plished th is
fall.
