T he senior boys are ex p ectin g som ething. W hat
is it? O h, nothing! Ju st w aiting to be invited to
com e and eat at the D om estic Science, th a t’s all.
S upervisor W . W . Coon arrived at C hem aw a a dav
or so ago for an official visit to our school. W e
are alw ays pleased to have him w ith us.
Since the saws and ham m ers have quit there is still
a great racket going on, but do not fear— it is only th e
seniors sin g ing and yelling their new songs and yells.
“ T he seniors are h a p p y ,” san g a sm all voice in
school one day. T he reason, it seem s, is that our
school paper, T h e C hem aw a A m erican, is back on th e
job doing more good th a n ever.
Really, w e've had m ighty nice w eather th is fall and
an im m ense am ount of crop seeding has been done in
th is part of the valley— C hem aw a doing her full sh are.
M r. and M rs. H . R. F reelan d of C alifornia and M r.
and M rs. H all of P o rtlan d and also Mrs. M. A . F re e
land were recent visitors of Mrs. B rickell. T h is is
Mr. and M rs. F re e la n d ’s first visit to one of the large
Indian schools and they were d elighted w ith the a t
m osphere of the place.
A m ong th e changes on th e m ap at Chem aw a w hich
so far have not been m entioned is th e fact th at all of
the cottages on th e road ju s t so u th of M itchell Hall
have been moved back ju s t west of our big g y m n as
ium . T h e reason for m oving these b u ild in g s was to
m ake room for th e large brick dorm itory, co nstruction
of w hich is to com m ence soon.
Mr. G reene was in M onm outh S u nday try in g to
secure a basketball m atch for both th e g irls ’ and the
boys’ team s, but th e general opinion am ong b ask et
ball fans was th a t th e C hem aw a boys’ team was a little
too stro n g for th e M onm outh players
H ow ever,
P resid en t G ooding spoke q u ite favorably of a ma tell
w ith the girls if a gvm ti isium could be secured for th e
gam e. Mr. G reene will try again n ex t m onth.
A side from the song service in w hich all p articip ated
d u rin g chapel exercises on S un d ay evening th e o rc h e s
tra played “ Chapel C h im es” by G reenw ald. Eva M ar
tin sang “ I Love You T ru ly ” by Bond, Mr. Bruce
played as a clarinet solo “ My Old K en tu ck y H o m e”
w ith variations by F ish er. M rs. R iddell, vocalist of
Salem , sang two num bers, A lbert O rsen gave the
“ Reply of S p artacu s to th e Rom an E n v o y s.” the
choir sang “ B eautiful C ity ” by Cook, and S u p t. H all
gave a talk on “ T h r if t.” I t was a most in te re stin g
occasion for all. S u p t H all has never given a b e tte r
talk in all of his splendid chapel addresses than the one
of last S unday evening. T h ere was p racticab ility and
common sense in every word he said. T h e lesion he
gave should have benefitted all who were so fo rtu n ate
as to h ear him .

E very-one seems anx io u s to have F ra n k Johnson
come back and resum e his studies. H e has been w ork
ing at th e new pow er-plant fixing steam pipes so th at
we will not all be icicles th is w inter.
M orning, noon and n ig h t, n o th in g but seniors are
found in the laboratory pressing specim ens of every
kind of weed to be found and learn in g th eir nam es.
Seems fu n n y th o u g h , the sm allest weed has th e b ig
gest nam e som etim es.
Miss McDowell is surely puzzled. E very class th a t
comes in the room is as q u iet as a m ouse. E specially
th e seniors. S h-h-h! W e ’ll tell you w hy. Tw o long
sw itches were put up in the w indow box for some of the
p lan ts to clim b up. B ut everybody has m istaken them
to be for som ething else. See?
T h e seniors were quite scared one day last week
when th ey w ent into Miss M cD ow ell’s room. Ju st
th in k , readers, they had to stu d y “ sn a p -d rag o n s” for
botany. But we all cam e o u t w ith a little more
know ledge in our cranium s th a n we had w hen we
w ent in, so no harm was done.

plant sta rts. It is a chim e w histle, and a treat to lis
ten to. Specially adapted for coaxing fo lk so u t of bed
on w inter m ornings.
T h e engineers have been grow ing gray-headed tr y
ing to keep people warm these nippy fall days. T hev
feel they m ust have succeeded p retty well, for the
other day one of the teachers sen t in an S. O. S. call
for a plum ber to come and tu rn the steam off.
T h is d ep artm en t has been w o rk in g very hard lately
in stallin g the new oil-b u rn in g p lan t. T hey were a n x
ious to have it ru n n in g before cold w eather arrived.
It all goes well, steam will be on the new plant S u n
day week, O ct. 29. A nd in cidentally the engineering
force is looking forward w ith d elight to the tim e w hen
the d irty d ru d g ery of shovelling coal and ashes will
be over, and they can come to w ork clean and spruced
up like th eir fellows. If anyone is at all inclined to
doubt th is, let them try shovelling coal an hour or two.
