T h e N onpareil and E x celsio r Societies had th eir
annual jo in t m eeting F rid a y evening, F eb ru ary 25th,
and it was one of th e m ost pleasant m eetings ever
held. A splendid program was given, as follows:

Some way it seemed to us th at our chapel service of
last S u n d ay evening w as of even greater in terest th an
usu al. T h e o rch estra played an “ In d ian In term ez zo ”
by Brow n, G eorge Lekanoff san g ‘ I ’m L o n g in g for
Y o u ” by Hatliaw’av w ith su p p o rt from both piano
and cello, C ruz M cD aniels gave as a baritone solo
“ M arch T riu m p h a l” from V e rd i’s opera “ A id a ,” th e
choir sang th e “ A m erican H y m n ” by K eller, and
S u p t. H all gave an o th er stro n g talk . H e especially
directed th e a tten tio n of the audience to th e lack of
decision, of v acillatin g , of never know ing o n e’s own
m in d , on th e p a rt of m any people. In fact, th is a
charge th a t can be m ade ag ain st a larg e m ajo rity of
I t ’s all over! N o m ore looping baskets (th a t is, on
th e inside) till n e x t season. T h e outdoor hoopers,
how ever, are ju st g ettin g w arm ed up and they will be
g o in g stro n g er and stro n g er as the good w eather in
creases. E ven at present th e crow d th a t patronizes
th e outdoor court is a large one.
O u r basketball season died a natural death last week
after a hard schedule. U n til th e end our varsity m ade
a hard fight, and alth o u g h it did not alw ays w in, th e
scores were so close th a t it w as also a pleasure to lose.
It was the in te n tio n of out ath letic m anager, M r.
B ent, to close our basketball season w ith one g rand
clim ax and he had for th e occasion scheduled th e
S outh P ark w ay team , cham pions of P o rtlan d , to play
the last gam e on th e hom e floor. A t the last m in u te
they ca n ce lled . W ith all d u e respect to th e cham pions,
we believe they called th e gam e off so as to end th eir
season w ith a whole sk in .
T oo bad, we m ust sav, for M r. Bent had th e gam e
well advertised. F u rth e rm o re , th e S outh P arkw av-
C hem aw a gam e was one th a t a large num ber of o u t
siders as well as ou r own follow ers w’ere anx io u s to see
and looked forw ard to w ith a g reat deal of interest.

Now th a t basketball is over our heads are tu rn ed
tow ard baseball and track w ork. N ew stars will soon
begin to shine, and, we hope, b rig h tly .
T h e G irls’ Reserves, and Ju n io r basketball team s
have also tucked aw ay th eir su its for th e rest of the
year. O ut of it all th e g irls’ team cam e th ro u g h on
top w ith o u t a single defeat and in every gam e beat
th e ir opponents by a nice, com fortable m argin. W e
adm it th a t th e girls certainly won th eir letters and
deserve honorable m ention. T h e players are as
follows: M arion W asson, Rose Downie, forw ards;
Rebecca C arpenter, E leanor H a u k , center; Effie Davis,
Jessie C leveland, guard s; M aude P o tts, spare.
T h e race-track and baseball dim ond w ere given a
th o ro u g h going-over early last week by Mr. Bent and
a detail of boys and m any track m en, both new7 and
old, are seen w orking out daily and w’e will continue
to w atch them and th eir progress to see how they will
represent C hem aw a in th e com ing track m eets and ball
gam es. T h e ball players have not w holly aw akened
as yet and the ability th at has been lyin g dorm ant all
th is tim e has not been aroused, but a call will soon be
issued for candidates on ih e diam ond and th o u g h our
p resent prospects for a w in n in g team are not overly
b rig h t w7e expect to develop one before th e season
closes.
T h e brig h t sunny days do not seem to bother th e
sen iors. T h ey d o n ’t seem to have th e sp rin g fever;
instead, they seem to have studied th a t m uch hard er.
T hose grades of the past m onth seem to have been
im -proved.
