o f th e choir filed onto th e stage and sang a n u m b er of
most to u ch in g an d ap p ro p riate sacred offerings.
E v ery th in g passed off as p lanned and proved of in
describable beauty and in terest. I t proved an evening
never to be forgotten by those fo rtu n ate eno u g h to be
in atten d an ce.
A t about 10 o ’clock on M onday m o rn in g th e re was
a gam e of sh in n ey betw een team s rep resen tin g M itch
ell and B rew er H alls. N early every-one on the ground
atten d ed and th eir presence was w orth w hile for th e
gam e was a sp irited affair from b eg in n in g to end. T h e
score was close and in favor of Brewer H all boys— 3
to 2.
In the afternoon th ere were basketball gam es in the
big gym . T h e Seniors G irls vs. Ju n io rs G irls proved
a very close and hotly-contested affair. I t was
nip an d -tu ck from the first to th e last w histle and
ended in favor of th e Senior G irls, 8 to 6.
T h is was followed by a gam e betw een Senior and
Ju n io r boys. T h is was a co n test th a t p u t everybody
on tip-toe and ended in a victory for th e Seniors, ten
to seven.
In th e ev ening th e M itchell H all boys w ere hosts
to th e g irls of M cBride H all and the larg er girls of
W inona H all. T h e reception was held in th e g y m
nasium . T h e you n g m en spared n eith er tim e nor e x
pense to m ake th is function a success in every way.
T h ey even had an orchestra from Salem as one of the
featu res of th e evening. T he evening proved a jo y
ous one for all and th e h o u rs passed all too q u ick ly .
A t the proper tim e refresh m en ts w ere served and
sh o rtly th ereafter all repaired to q u arters, a little tired
b u t very happy.
T uesday forenoon was devoted to necessary w ork in
th e various d ep artm en ts of th e in stitu tio n , th ere alw ays
being m any th in g s w hich require atten tio n in a school
like o u rs if th e plant is to be k ep t up to th e high
stan d ard w hich C hem aw a m aintains. T h e afternoon
th e stu d e n ts took as th eir own and en tertain ed th e m
selves in various w ays. L et it suffice to state th a t the
d ay was well sp en t and the sp irit of C hristm as was
alw ays in evidence.
In th e ev en in g th ere was a reception in the big gym
by th e sm all g irls of W inona H all for the occupants
of the Sm all B oys’ H om e and th e sm aller boys o f
Brew er H all. In every way it proved a m ost joyous
occasion and the little folks u n doubtedly had the tim e
of th eir lives. T hey seemed to en ter into every feat
ure of th e evening w hole-heartedly and th ere w ere no
dull m om ents on the p art of anybody. V isitors to
th e school spoke m ost highly of th e pleasure th a t th e
little folks’ party gave them . A t a fitting hour a
p arty of h ap p y y o u n g sters repaired to q u arte rs, thus
en d in g an o th er day of ou r holiday w eek.
W ednesday m orn in g was devoted to th e usual
ro u tin e w ork of the school and cleaning u p about the
various buildings and the cam pus generally. In th e
afternoon nearly everybody repaired to th e gym nasium
and w itnessed a couple of basketball gam es. T h e
first gam e was played by girls, F resh ies vs. S opho
m ores, and was m ost in te re stin g from every angle.
T h e Sophom ores won by a score of 10 to 3. T h is
gam e was followed by a gam e by th e boys, F reshies
vs. S ophom ores, and it, too, proved in terestin g to
w atch even th o u g h it was m ore one-sided th a n the
gam e by th e girls. T h is gam e w ent to the F reshies
to th e tu n e of 42 to 12.
In the evening the larger girls of th e school gave
a reception to the larger boys. T h e gym was re
splendent in decorations, evergreens, p en n an ts, m o t
tos and various other attractiv e fe a tu re s— in fact, th e
y o u n g ladies had left no stone u n iu rn ed w hich w ould
in any way m ake th e evening m em orable and enjo y a
ble for th e ir large party of guests. S hortly after all
had assem bled they gave a m ost pleasing program of
a m usical and literary character w hich bro u g h t u n
stin ted praise from every-one present. G am es, m usic,
conversation and m any unique diversious gave pleas
u re to all and helped pass th e evening all too quickly.
D u rin g th e e n tire evening th e y o ung ladies served
delicious refreshm ents and in every possible way tried
to en tertain th eir guests. T h ey succeeded fully in
everj th in g they undertook and won praise from one
and all. A s hostesses they took th e h ighest ta n k .
On T h u rsd ay evening four rep resen tativ es from
each of the four literary societies, N onpareil, W inona,
E xcelsior and R eliance, m et in th e au d ito riu m in
th eir annual spelling contest for a cu p . T h e contest
was based upon both w ritten and oral w ork and was
won by the R eliance boys. I t was a good contest, of
in terest and benefit to all. M r. Devol gave out the
w ords and Mr. Iliff held th e speller on th e various co n
testan ts and kept tally on th e ir spelling.
Just preceding th e spelling contest M r. P aul P etri,
a noted singer from P o rtlan d , gave a sh o rt song re
cital accom panied by M rs. P etri on th e piano. T h is
was a g en u in e treat for all. T h e songs were u n u s
ually happy in th e ir fitness and ap p ropriateness for
th e occasion and w ere rendered to perfection. W e
have never heard a finer sin g er th a n M r. P etri and
the su p p o rt given him by M rs. P etri was of th e highest
o rd er. H ere we have a couple of artists of g reat m ag
n itu d e w hose m any years of E uropean tra in in g under
some of the w o rld ’s most fam ous m asters have helped
them into a class bv them selves. T h eir w ork is s u
p erb in every w ay. In behalf of the school we th a n k
them for th e splendid treat given us.
