THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN
G EN ER A L ITEMS
T h e p rin tin g office is full of “ d ev ils” — five of them .
M artin Colby was in ch arg e of th e m echanical d ra w
ing classes during th e absence of M r. Iliff on business
in P o rtlan d . T his speaks m ig h ty well for M artin .
M r. C ham berlin rep o rts th a t pupils who arrived
here on the close of th e C ushm an School have been
well in stru cted in steam an d electrical en g in eerin g and
th ey are all doing m ost creditable w ork in his d e p a rt
m ent.
Mrs. R isser and the seniors are p u ttin g in overtim e
in th e preparation and rehearsal of a play w hich th e
seniors are to produce in th e n ear fu tu re. O u r hopes
are high for an evening of en jo y m en t—real e n te rta in
m ent.
T h e date of the open session for th e R eliance L ite r
ary Society will be Ja n u a ry 14 and the m em bers are
already busy w ith p rep aratio n s for the event. T h is
session will undoubtedly be of more th an o rd in ary in
terest .
Mr. S tu a rt, w ith a sm all force of plum ber boys, is
about as lively as a “ short o rd e r” cook, for he and
his boys are co n stan tly in receipt of sh o rt order
“ S .O . S .s ” from all over th e g ro u n d s. T h ey re
spond, too.
Mr. H au ser is coach ol th e basketball team s and has
about 30 hoop-shooters at practice reg u larly and from
th is m aterial he will select th e ’varsity team . T h e
prospects for a good stro n g team to rep resen t th e
school th is season are good.
Mr. Bettles rep o rts an increase of 32 new m em bers
in the H og fam ily— born last week. H e also states
th a t he is fatten in g a num b er of porkers for C h rist
m as. T h ere is no d en y in g the fact that roast pork
tastes about as good as an y th in g im aginable.
Mr. Jam es reports business good in the tailor shop
at all tim es. H e is not advertising for business, as
he and his boys alw ays have a lapful of it. H e has
praise for his boys in reg ard to th eir efforts, ability
and in d u stry . W e like to g et a rep o rt of this n a tu re .
Mrs. Rose D ow nie is co ach in g th e girls who aspire
to play basketball th is season. She has about 25 girls
p laying u n d er her supervision and from th is m aterial
will select those who are to com pose th e rep resentative
g irls’ team of the school. T h e in d icatio n s are favor
able for a good git Is’ team th is year.
T h e co u n ty au th o rities have of late done a lot of
w ork on th e roads in o u r section. H en ry T u rn e r,
assistan t farm er at C hem aw a, has also done a lot of
w ork recently on o u r p riv ate roads, so alto g eth er we
are q u ite fo rtu n a te in the condition of o u r roadw ays
at present. Good roads are both a necessity and a
blessing.
M r. B ent, bandm aster, rep o rts a m em bership of 36
in his organization and says th a t ev ery th in g goes forth
m usically and harm oniously to his satisfaction. H e
expects by sp rin g to direct a 40-piece band at C he
mawa and we hope he is not d isappointed, as a good
big band is an asset for any school, and C hem aw a
w ants and m ust have the best— n o th in g less.
A “ C ” club is the latest organization to take on
life at Chem aw a. It is com posed of athletes of the
school who have in past events won th eir “ C ” and
its object is to m aintain proper in terest and a spirit of
fair play in all of C hem aw a’s athletic activities.
T h ere is no doubt but th is is a move in th e rig h t d i
rection. M r. R eginald D ow nie is selected as president.
On W ednesday our new library b u ild in g was open
ed for the accom m odation of those connected w ith the
school. T h e new building is m ost splendidly arranged
for its purpose and is a source of pride for all—young
and old. W e have a large num ber of splendid volum es
w hich cover th e best w orks in E n g lish th a t are o b
tainable. No definite arran g em en ts as to hours have
been m ade, b u t th is m atter will probably be settled
w ith in a few days.
On every hand we en co u n ter th e C hristm as sp irit
am ong th e stu d e n ts. M any are already decorating
th e ir room s. R um or has it th a t the boys of M itchell
H all are considering the m atter of offering a p rize
am ong them selves for the best decorated room in th a t
p o p u lar b u ild in g . W e like to hear of such moves and
th a t they originated w ith th e boys them selves. U nder
the circum stances we shall be looking over M itchell
H all for th e “ last w ord” in room decoration.
T he track men are already “ w orking o u t” easily
in p reparation for th e indoor track m eet w hich occurs
an n u ally in P ortland in th e sp rin g . A lthough th e
m eet is yet quite a ways off by b eg in n in g now and
w o rking easliy our boys will be in b etter form to
sta n d th e test th a n if they w aited u n til the last m inute
and attem pted to ru sh them selves in to condition. Mr.
S anders will undoubtedly be th e coach for the track
team boys. W e have a m ig h ty fine outlook for a
team th is year.
W e are to have a high old tim e in basketball d u r
in g the holiday w eek, as is assured by th e form ation
o f a basketball league.
T h is tournam ent will have as
com petitors team s com posed of vocational stu d e n ts—
freshm en, sophom ores, ju n io rs and seniors. I t is
m ore th an probable th a t th e w inners am ong the voca
t i o n a l will be challenged by th e h ig h sc h o o l stu d en ts.
A t any rate we are certain of some m ighty classy
d em o n stratio n s in hoop shooting. Be there and back
yo u r favorites— you c a n ’t lose.
G et the C hristm as spirit!
