and M rs. T u rn e y , Miss Scholder, Miss W hite and
Miss S to n eb rin k have all m ade quick trip s recen tly .
T h e n ig h t of the storm was also the n ig h t of a mim
her of th e lyceum course in Salem . M rs. S herm an and
M rs. E ato n bravely stru g g led to th e O regon E lectric
statio n and w aited. T h e train was storm -stayed so
they bravely stru g g led back again. Miss O rr and
Miss E arlo u g h er w ent to Salem in an auto to find
Salem in d ark n ess because of the storm , so they cam e
back, also.
On Ja n u a ry 2nd about 50 of our stu d e n ts will com
prise a class for confirm ation in th e C atholic ch u rch .
On th is occasion Chem aw a will feel honored to w el
com e Most R everend A rchbishop A lexander C hristie,
w ho will conduct the confirm ation services. H is G race
w as at C hem aw a som e years ago and we are all pleased
th a t he is again to be here on a mission sim iliar to
th at of form er years. T h is occasion will be an event
to w hich all will look forw ard w ith pleasurable a n
ticipatio n s
T h e 8th A ’s had a short program on F rid ay . Most
of th e tim e was sp e n t on a debate concerning the
question of uniform m arriage and divorce laws for all
states. T h is w as a question w hich had com e up in
civics and th e debaters, led by Irv in g H e n d rix and
W illiam M in th o rn e, b ro u g h t forth som e good points.
A n o th er featu re of th e program was a song by A lbert
O rsen, R oderick H ill and R obert C ham berlin. No
one suspected th a t these young men could g et u p and
sin g a song unaccom panied, but they did an d had to
sing a second tim e.
T h e new lib rary , w ith its artistic outside ap p ear
ance and its well arranged in terio r, was opened last
w eek, w ith Miss K ath erin e E a rlo u g h e i, lib rarian , in
charge. T h is is a long-felt need at C hem aw a and
th ere is no le atu re of the school of w hich teachers and
stu d e n ts are m ore proud than o f this h andy, spacious
and conveniently arran g ed lib rary . T h e Chem aw a
stu d e n ts enjoy good books and it is a pleasure to ob
serve the b rillian tly lighted library in the evening
filled w ith our y o u n g men quietly en jo y in g th eir
favorite books or p rep arin g th eir lessons for th e follow
in g day. E ach m o rn in g a long line of girls with
books u n d er th eir arm s may be seen re tu rn in g from
the library to q u arters.
SENIOR NOTES
T h e h isto ry test is over and it is said everyone
passed.
T h e class m eetin g on W ednesday was devoted to
business connected w ith the com ing class play.
T he senior bookbags have been renam ed lately.
T hey are now called rag-bags. T he girls say th ey
have w orn o u t u n d er hard usage. T h e boys th in k
they were n o t sewed stro n g ly en o u g h .

also P h ilip , but M r. B ob’s p ictu re cannot be show n.
T he S en io rs’ play has been the source of unusual
trouble th is year. W hen the books cam e and th e
com m ittee on cast of characters started to w^ork they
found th ere was not a boy in th e class w ho could
carry th e title role
Mr. B o b .” T h ere was no tim e
to select another play, and besides, " M r.B o b ” is ju s t
w hat they w anted to give. T h e point was finally
settled by casting th e senior boys in other p arts and
securing the service of som e one else for ‘‘M r. B o b .”

th e class of 21 is too m odest to have his nam e p u b

At th e last m eeting of the Y . M. C. A . C abinet
W illiam F razier was chosen to fill the position of c h a ir
m an of th e social com m ittee w hich was held until re
cently by E lw ood T ow ner.
Chem aw a was well represented a t the S tate O lder
B oys’ C onference in Salem w ith five delegates, F red
W ilder, F ra n k C orbett, N ick S tepetin, E dw in L iljegren
and A lex W illiam s. T h ey rep o rt excellent m eetings,
a fine tim e and good " e a t s .” T h ere w ere about 350
boys in atten d an ce, and th e program included som e of
the strongest speakers in the n o rth w est.
" A G ir l’s w o rk ,” was th e them e of th e Y . W .C .A .
m eeting last S unday afternoon. U nder the leadership
of K ath erin e L oftus, th e follow ing topics w ere ably
discussed by th e girls: " W h a t place has w ork in a
g ir l’s life?” " T h e choice of a life w o rk ;” "W o rk
ju st to earn m oney, or w ork as se rv ic e;” " T h e value
or lack of value in d oing w ork we are not interested
in ;” " T h e relation of w'ork, stu d y , rest and play in a
g ir l’s life .”
