OUR M ACH INE SHOP EQ U IPM E N T
W hen the C ushm an school was closed the m achine
shop equipm ent was acquired by S unt. H all for use at
Chem awa. So was th e m achinery of th e w ood
w orking d ep artm en t. All of th e m achinery received
by our school from C ushm an is first grade and is also
in first-class condition. It is valued at m any th o u san d s
of dollars. A dded to equipm ent already at Chem aw a.
we now have, beyond doubt, one of the finest plants
in the S tate of O regon for w ork in these tw o d e p a rt
m ents.
A detailed description of these m achines at th is
tim e is im possible, but it is in terestin g to know’ som e
th in g reg ard in g them . T h ere are six lath es ra n g in g in
capacity from the sm allest w’ork necessary to large
dem ands. A C incinnati planer and a m illin g m achine
of th e sam e m ake are also in our equ ip m en t. T h e
last tw o m achines are both of the finest w orkm anship
and have au to m atic feed and w ork to th e th o u san d th
part of an inch.
In connection w ith th e m illing m achine is an o th er
m achine know n as a m illing g rin d er, used for finish
ing w ork done by the planer and m illing m achine,
and for num erous other phases of w ork. T his m a
chine has even finer ad ju stm en ts and g reater scope
of w ork th an any of the o th er m achines. T h e p o ssi
bilities are beyond th e belief of one who is not
acquainted w ith it and the m ore one know s of it the
g reater is the respect he feels for those who created it.
T h e re is an o th er g rin d er of the heavy d u ty type for
sh arp en in g lath e tools and other w ork. It is one th a t
can be used w ith o u t fear of d raw in g th e tem per of
steel, as it ru n s in w ater and the w'ork and stone are
both bathed in a cooling stream w hile th e m achine is
ru n n in g .
In addition to the excellent m achine shop eq u ip
m ent we also received the en tire fo undry eq u ip m en t
w hich we hope to get in to service in the near fu tu re .
S tu d en ts now here, as well as prospective ones, can
see from the above w hat a field is open for the boy who
comes to Chem aw a d eterm ined to m ake the best of
w hat this fine school has for him . H e has only to
accept and do his honest best.
