CHEMAWA OUTCLASSES PACIFIC U—104 TO 0
In 1913 C hem aw a defeated Pacific College 93 to 0.
In 1915 we defeated A lbany College 72 to 0. But in
no instance have we ever walloped any team as bad as
we did Pacific U niversity here last S atu rd ay — 104 to 0.
T h o u g h th e P. U . team fought gam ely every second
of the contest they were no m atch for the huskv C h e
mawa eleven. T h ey deserve credit for being dead
gam e sports. T h o u g h defeat stared them in th e face
from the very first m in u te they put up a plucky fight
and gave all they had till the end.
T he contest was clean and free from ro u g h n ess and
unsportsm anlike conduct. D uring the en tire gam e
th ere was not one penalty inflicted upon either side for
other th an off-side play. A fter th e gam e and th e th ree
loug rah s for each team the m enshook hands and w alk
ed to the gym arm in arm am id th e sh o u tin g and cheer
ing of the spectators. T h ere is glory and sport in a
gam e like th a t for both team s and we adm ire th e los
ers as m uch as th e victors.
It seem s th a t our team stru ck its real stride in the
last tw o gam es. T h e en tire eleven played as one big
m achine. B ehind every play th ere was form ation and
pow er. E v ery tim e C aptain E der, Sam pson and C hoate
plunged th ro u g h th e line there was yardage gained.
I t could not help being so. for “ L u p p s” P eratro v ich
and Bob Dow nie on th e tig h t side of th e line and th e
N ix brothers on th e other opened u p h o les big enough
to drive a horse and cart th ro u g h .
T h e open field ru n n in g of Sam pson and C hoate was
the feature of th e gam e and was prettier than we have
w itnessed anyw here.
T h e 104 points registered were p retty equally d iv id
ed betw een E der, Sam pson and C hoate. L ong end ru n s
and forw ard passes were plentiful. Several n etted us
from 20 to 60 and even 80 yards. C aptain E d e r’s toe
was in excellent co n d itio n an d he converted 14 out of
a possible 15 kicked goals.
In Johnson we have one of the best centers C hem
aw a has produced in m any years. H is passing is ac
cu rate and he backs u p th e line to perfection. H e not
only played a good gam e S atu rd ay b u t has been p lay
in g good steady ball all season. L iljegren played a
good defensive gam e a t left end an d also com pleted tw o
forw ard passes for big gains. T h is is E d w in ’s first year
on the v arsity and he prom ises to be a real valuable
man in th e fu tu re.
T h e one th in g m ost m arked in th is gam e w as the
m anner in w hich o u r m en carried the ball. E v ery
man plunged in to th e line, full force, and used every
ounce of his w eight and speed to carry the ball fo rw ard .
In every instance th e ball was carried to or past cen ter
from th e kick-off and for long g ain s th ro u g h the line.
In fact, the P. U. team could only p u t up a feeble d e
fense ag ain st th e pow erful line and aerial attack of
our ’varsity .
“HOTSHOTS*’ DEFEAT SALEM HIGH SCHOOL—
7 TO 0
On A rm istice Day the band and a large crow d of
Chem aw a rooters accom panied our second team to
Salem w here th e gam e betw een o u r “ H o tsh o ts” and
th e h ig h school team was played.
Led by the band, our rooters m arched to th e W . U.
field w here 2,000 Salem spectators had assembled to
w itness the contest. Seated at one end of the big
g ran d sta n d our rooters did some real live cheering
and sin g in g to the accom panim ent of the band. T h e
en tire crow d stood and sang w hile the band played
“ Chem aw a, we will love th ee fo rever” as our team
trotted onto the field.
T his is the second tim e our boys took the high
school team into cam p. E arly in the season our
second team defeated them 20 to 12 and they chose
A rm istice Day to even u p th e defeat. But th ere was
no su ch lu ck . T h e defensive work of ou r “ H o tsh o ts”
was su perb and too m uch for Salem , allow ing them
to m ake first dow n only once. O nly once did th e
Salem team get w ithin scoring distance and th a t w as
w hen they failed to m ak ea place kick from the 35-yard
line.
E arly in the fourth q u arte r L iljegren grabbed a for«
w ard pass w hich netted us 45 yards and a touchdow n.
B ettles kicked the goal. On the kick-off th e “ H o t
sh o ts” carried the ball well into the center of th e field.
On the first ru sh Bettles m ade a long pass to “ Je w ”
B uchert. who carried th e ball w ithin five y ards of th e
goal line. T h e boys w ere on the m arch to another
score w hen the final shot w as fired.
