LITERARY SOCIETIES
Reliance
A t the reg u lar m eeting of th e R eliance L iterary S o­
ciety held on F rid ay evening, N ovem ber 5th, th e fol­
low ing program was rendered: O pening address, W il­
liam F razier; recitation, C larence E dw ards; D ebate,
Resolved, T h a t steam engines are of m ore benefit
th an gas e n g in e s.” T h e affirm ative side was taken up
by Roy N uckolls and Joseph R acine and the negative
side by E d w in L iljegren and A lbert Spearson. T h e
judges decided in favor of the negative side. Songs
and yells were given in closing.
E xcelsior
T he reg u lar m eeting of the E xcelsiors was held in
room 7 of the academ ic building on F rid ay , w ith P re s­
ident F an n in the chair. A fter old and new business
was discussed th e follow ing program was rendered:
R ecitations by O rton and Merculieff; debate, “ R esolv­
ed, T h a t th e U nited S tates should adopt the L eague of
N a tio n s.” G eorge B arrett and N ic k S te p ita n rep rese n t­
ed the affirm ative side and F ran k Corbett and W allace
Beebe the negative. Miss R oberts, official visitor,
gave us some valuable advice, as did o u r advisory
m em ber. Miss H en d rix . T he society ad jo u rn ed w ith
society songs and yells.
N onpareil
T h e reg u lar m eeting of the N onpareil Society o p en ­
ed F rid ay ev en in g w ith V ice-president C ham berlin in
the ch air. Some im p o rtan t business was transacted
after w hich the society opened th e p ro g ra m . V ictoria
Sansaver gave a v o lu n tary reading, M aude P o tts and
E lizabeth C hurchill san g a nice d u et. Several am u sin g
charades were presented by a trio of o u r g irls

and Ione H en ry sang “ T h e T um ble Down S h a c k .”
A n im prom ptu talk was given by Jeff Davis. Irm a
L eC lair gave a read in g entitled “ T h e B ravest Battle
th a t E v er was F o u g h t.” T h e debate, “ Resolved,
T h a t y o ung ladies should not reso rt to artificial aids
in b eau tify in g th em selv es,” was decided in favor of
the affirm ative. T h e advisory m em ber presented her
rep o rt and th e society adjourned w ith the society
song and yells.
W inona
A n arm istice program was given in th e au d ito riu m
by th e C arnation D ivision of th e W inona L iterary S o­
ciety on F rid a y last. T he m eeting was opened by’ a
very in sp irin g and helpful talk by the president, Julia
G rom off.
I his was followed by songs and cheers by
all. Josephine C orbett gave a piano solo; Lucy Sexton
recited “ L est W e F o rg e t” by K ipling; a q u a rte t com ­
posed of Ju lia G rom off, Mabie B lodgett, Josephine
Corbett and E m m a Carlson sang songs popular d u rin g
th e w ar; C lara M orris gave pen pictures; E d n a W il-
lette played a piano solo, and E d n a H ill read local
jokes; A gnes B elgarde. M artha Ivanoff and M ary
Songrey san g several songs. An in terestin g arm istice
essay was read by Mabel B lodgett; E m m a Carlson then
played a few w artim e tu n es on her m outh h arp . T h e
C arnation girls dressed as soldiers, sailors, Red Cross
nurses, etc ., concluded th e ir program w ith a “ Parade
of the A llie s.” A fter th e busi ness m eeting, Mrs.
B rickell, o u r welcome visitor, gave a pleasing little
talk. W ith a few w ords from our advisory m em ber,
M rs. R isser, and a few m ore songs we ad journed.
A MEMORABLE MEETING
S unday afternoon, in the large assem bly room o f
M cBride H all a g ro u p of th irty -o n e g irls were re ­
ceived in to th e m em bership o f the Y .W .C .A . w ith a
very beautiful in stallation service, w hich was conducted
by the president, Ola F airw eath er, and th e chairm an
of th e m em bership com m ittee, Josephine C orbett.
A fter th e installatio n service, M rs. H all gave a
splendid ta lk to th e girls. H er ta lk ,“ A H an d fu l of
G old N u g g e ts ,” w as full of excellent suggestions for
character build in g , and w as m uch enjoyed by the girls.
Mrs. H all expressed herself as being well pleased
w ith the large association this year, and especially
w ith the serious purpose w hich th e girls are show ing
in th eir w ork.
SENIOR NOTES
T h e “ floor” com m ittee of senior boys did a good
job of oiling last S atu rd ay .

A t the stu d e n t body election for this year C larence
E d w ards, ’21, was elected secretary and K ath erin e
L oftus, ’21, serg ean t-at-arm s.
L ast week the old senior girls sp ru n g a surprise on
the four new senior girls by in itia tin g them in to the
real sp irit of th e ir class. A fter lig h t refreshm ents,
followed by g host stories, all retired.
A t the sen io rs’ class m eeting F rid ay the follow ing
program was rendered: “ E x c e lsio r,” by O pal P ear­
son: jokes, C lara M orais; violin solo, K ath erin e L oftus;
yells, led by E llen Beall; C hem aw a school songs.
T h e senior girls served a most delicious d in n e r in
th e dom estic science S u nday. Ola F airw eath er, N a n ­
cy M athison, H a rrie t C ain, Beulah W hite and O pal
Pearson prepared th e meal and served it to the m any
guests.
