DOMESTIC SCIENCE NOTES
T h e num ber of stu d e n ts enrolled in th e ju n io r class
is thirty-five. A m ong the new m em bers are M a rg a r­
et Jackson, E thel H en ry , Dewey Sam pson, Ione
H en ry , Billie W illiam s, E lizabeth P o itras and C harles
and W ilfred E vans.
“ Ja z z y ” little caps will d istin g u ish the seniors from
now on. T hey made th eir first appearance this past
week and no doubt will be th e inspiration to let us
know th at the dignified seniors are around.
Mr. and M rs. A ldrich of Salem w ere interested
visitors at the s tu d e n ts ’ social on S aturday eve. T hese
good people show a great in terest in Chem aw a and
her stu d e n ts and are alw ays m ost heartily welcomed.
M r. and M rs. S. S. Risser, who have been visiting
th e ir d a u g h te r in-law , Mrs. A da B. Risser, for the
past two w eeks, left S atu rd ay evening for th eir hom e
in P ennsylvania. T hey will go by the way of C ali­
fornia, w here they expect to rem ain a few weeks v isit­
ing all points of in terest in th at state. T h ey m ade
m any friends at C hem aw a d u rin g th eir stay here.
T h e m arriage of M arina N elson, class ’20, an d E arl
P otts, an ex -stu d en t of C hem aw a, has been rum ored
around the cam pus, but this week an official notice ol
the m arriage has been recived by the Sigm a P hy D eltas.
M arina w rites th at E arl is building a new hom e for
her at Susanville, C alifornia, and th eir fu tu re looks
b rig h t and happy. F elicitatio n s go out to them from
th eir m any friends at C hem aw a.
M r. and M rs. T u rn e y d elightfully en tertain ed at
d in n e r on S atu rd ay eve. T h e H allow e’en m otif was
tastefully carried out in th e table and room decora­
tions, large baskets of au tu m n flowers and beautifully
tin ted au tu m n foliage were artistically arranged about
the room . T h e d in n e r table was centered w ith a large
bowl of au tu m n blossoms. T h e favors were small
Jack O ’L an tern s, filled w ith n u ts and after d in n er
m ints. Covers were laid for S u p erin ten d en t and Mrs.
H all, M r. and Mrs. R eginald Downie and Mr. and
Mrs. T u rn ey .
T he ju n io rs have been w orking hard m aking things
for sale th e last few weeks.
T h e dom estic science girls have been very busy the
last few weeks can n in g and m aking pickles.
H attie Cayton is cook in dom estic science this
week. She has prepared some very appetizing m eals.
E aura W aun was very successful w ith her bread b ak ­
ing last w eek. She baked bread for high school
lunches.
fh e ju n io r girls find they have made great im prove­
m ent th is last year and th e ir w ork is m uch more sa t­
isfactory to them selves.
l'he seniors are stu d y in g food preservation and are
doing practical work and p u ttin g up tom atoes, apples,
saner k rau t and apple b u tte r, etc.
T he dom estic science classes are enjoying the sale
of cakes, pies, buns and d o u g h n u ts. T he preparation
of these eatables is good practice in cooking.
T h e im provem ents and cem ent walks about the
hom e econom ics building are found very convenient
and are m uch appreciated by th e dom estic science girls.
W e have some very good cooks in our class. One
of o u r professionals said to another, “ Say, cook, if
you do not let oxygen in your oven th e r ’llb e com bus­
tion (n o t th in k in g of her o w n ). L e t’s look at your
c a k e .” It proved com bustible, it b urned.
T he chapel exercises on S u n d ay evnieng were fully
up to the usual high stan d ard m aintained. T h e or­
ch estra played “ Serenade d ’A m o u r” by von Blon,
the O ctette G irls sang "A n g e ls at. E v e n tid e ” by P arks,
Mabel Blodget gave as a recitation “ T h e Voice the
G erm ans M issed,” Miss Ju d d gave a vocal solo, the
choir sang “ In T h y E o v e” by M cAuly, and S upt.
H all closed th e program w ith a fine talk to th e s tu ­
dents, in w hich he m entions m any facts th a t are vital
in stu d e n t life and education. T hese chapel talk s of
Mr. Hall are on practical lines alw ays, hence th eir
value to all.
T h e C hem aw a Y .M .C .A . held a discussional m eet­
ing in th e au d ito riu m S u n d ay evening, O ctober 31,
1920. T h e general topic was: “ W hat th e object of
the ‘Y ’ is .” T h e follow ing were discussed by m em ­
bers: “ W h a tth e ‘Y ’ does for th e m in d ,” A rth u r Jo h n ­
son: “ W hat the Y ’ does for th e b o d y ,” F red W ilder;
“ W h a t the ‘Y ’ does for the s p ir it,” C ruze McDaniels.
E oulin Brewer and others expressed th eir point of view
of th e subject u n d er discussion. T he ‘Y ’ has a big
plan to execute this year, w hich will m ake the o rg an ­
ization a bigger and b etter organization th a n it has
been heretofore.
MATRON’S DEPARTMENT
Miss Skipton reports th a t there are n in ety -n in e
tables in the din in g hall in use at present.
'fh e lau n d ry in M cBride H all has been supplied
w ith a n um ber of m uch-needed wash boards.
Mr. and Mrs. Brow nell, M rs. Shoem aker ami two
other residents of P ortland were visitors at the school
on M onday.
All th e chairs, tables and dressers in M cBride H all
have been painted w hite. T h is adds g reatly to the
appearance of the rooms.
M cBride H all is full to the lim it. E very available
space is used for beds. In fact, we have all the girls
th a t we can accom m odate at the present tim e.
SENIOR NOTES
H arriet Cain m ade her first appearance at Chem aw a
as a saxophone soloist on th e senior class program .
A t th e class m eeting F rid a y E dw in L iljegren and
Daniel O rton gave the Scene of Tw o G obbos, from
T he M erchant of V enice.
It was all eight senior girls could do S unday noon
to beg Mr. Devol to take them w alking for he c m c e r­
tainly joke and tease— but he gave them a fine w alk.
A ccording to C hem aw a custom the seniors, w earing
th eir new class caps, ap peared in th e dining-room on
F rid ay noon and gave vigorous yells for th eir class and
school.
You should have heard th e senior girls at th e dom ­
estic science prep arin g th e supper for the football boys
w hen they heard th a t C hem aw a won and ou r boys were
com ing for supper. T h e g irls gave th e team a yell
along w ith a fine supper for four tables of h u n g ry men.
