ITEM S FROM THE TRADES
W e are fo rtu n ate in h aving painters who put on
the plaster to paint over w hen it is lacking.
T h e p ain ters will soon rep ain t the bakery. At
present they are finishing w ork in the g irls ’ q u arters.
T h e farm ers have finished p la n tin g w heat. T h e
oats will soon be planted also. Potatoes are show ing
good size and q u a n tity .
Recently the blacksm iths overhauled the beds at
W inona H all, greatly im proving th e appearance and
com fort of the dorm itories.
T he large w o o d -tu rn in g lath e received from th e
C ushm an school has been placed in the ca rp e n ter
shop and will soon be in use.
Pigs m ust eat and squeal, but the m ore they eat
the less they squeal. H ave you noticed how quiet
Mr. B etties keeps them ? T h e re is a reason.
Cows and calves are doing nicely at th e d airy , e x
cept w hen som eone leaves th e gate open, then they
do not behave so well. S h u t the gate, dairy boys.
T he blacksm iths are reb u ild in g the steel lockers re
ceived from th e C ushm an School and are p ro viding
some m uch-needed accom m odation for the boys’ d o rm i
tories.
O ur new m achine shop is alm ost ready for the roof
and a force of carpenters is expected on th e job th e
first of the w eek. W e hope to have it com pleted
shortly.
W e have reason to be proud of the condition of our
barns. W e learn th a t Com m issioner Sells spoke favor
ably of th eir condition and we feel th at he would find
th e same condition any tim e.

cu rta in s for the library are in place and th e necessary
work on the fu rn itu re is going forw ard.
Several sets of harness were shipped from our h a r
ness d ep artm en t last week. M ore is being m ade all
the tim e and the boys are doing well at the w ork.
Shoes co n tin u e to come in from all d irections and in
a very sh o rt tim e go out again for more service. T h e
boys in this d ep artm en t have an excellent o p p o rtu n ity
to learn one of th e best paying trades there is today.
T h e en gineers have been stu d y in g about coal and
its properties. That is not th e reason for last w eek ’s
shortage, how ever. T h e vacuum pum p th a t handles
th e retu rn from the h ea tin g system is u n d ergoing r e
pairs. W e are also in need of a new boiler feed
pum p, w hich we hope will arriv e soon. A t present
th e w’asher at th e lau n d ry is claim ing o u r a tte n tio n .
ACADEM IC NOTES
The ju n io rs w ere pleased to welcome Jam es C hoate
into the class.
Miss H en d rix was ill for several days last week and
M iss A iken su b stitu ted in her place.
In a speed contest in arith m etic in the seventh
grade, John P etellin was the w inner.
M r. Devol visited the ju n io r class last week d u rin g
algebra period and helped un tan g le some problem s.
T h e m em bers of the e ig h th grade are d ra ftin g a
constitution for th eir class. Debates seem to be th e
the order of th e day, but they hope to have all q u e s
tions settled satisfactorily by n ex t week.
T he tailors are proceeding w ith the usual yearly
w ork of fitting o u t th e boys. Some exceedingly
creditable w ork is being done in th is d ep artm en t, of
w hich th e school should be proud.

T h e plum bers are a busy lot at present with radiators,
trap s and heatin g m ains. Some much needed sp o u t
ing and eave tro u g h s have been put up also and o th er
jobs too num erous to m ention have been com pleted.
T he carp en ters recently com pleted repairs on th e
back stairs at W inona H all and a like piece of w ork is
now und er way at M itchell H all. Door locks, w in
T h e ju n io rs have begun th e ir experim ents in ch em is
try . T u esd ay E d n a H ill perform ed a very successful
ex p erim en t in p rep arin g chlorine gas. E lm er T h erri-
ault and A lbert Spearson were busy on M onday p re
p arin g hydrochloric acid for use in the plum bing shop.
T h e engineers are d eriv in g m uch benefit from th eir
stu d y of chem istry.
