R eliance
On O ctober 8, 1920, the R eliance L iterary Society
opened prom ptly at seven o ’clock w ith a good a t
tendance of old m em bers. Five new m em bers were
adm itted to the society.
Most of the evening was spent in review ing the
co n stitu tio n , and discussion of old and new business
for the good of the society.
A fter giving songs and yells the m eeting ad jo u rn ed .
W inona
T he W inonas enjoyed a new “ W inona Q u a rte t” on
F rid ay evening. M aud C raig, A nnabelle W oods,
E m m a Carlson and M adeline W ild er were the m em
bers and th e sin g in g was especially good. Lucy S exton,
Lillian G au th ier and V iola Beyers gave an am using
dialogue. Josephine Corbett co n trib u ted some jokes.
E m m a Carlson gave a m o u th h arp num ber and several
volunteer selections were added to the regular p ro
gram . Some good talks were given by th e older m em
bers on the selection of officeis. T h e usual song and
cheer period w as indulged in and it was tim e for a d
jo u rn m en t. T h e old president, Ju lia Grom off, was in
the chair.
E xcelsior
T h e reg u lar m eeting of the E xcelsior L iterary S o
ciety was held in the academ ic b u ild in g in room 7
w ith V ice-president C orbett in the ch air. T h e p u r
pose of th e m eeting was for th e election of officers tor
the com ing term . T he follow ing were elected: P res
ident, L ogan F a n n ; vice-president, C ruz M cDaniel;
secretary , Robert Downie; treasu rer G eorge B arrett;
se rg ean t-at-arm s, Irv in g H e n d rix ; reporter, F . P.
C orbett. Follow ing th eir election each officer gave a

Downie, was present and gave us a good talk on lo y
alty. A fter a few’ yells and songs the society adjourned.

T he seniors are glad to w elcome B eulah W hite,
Opal Pearson, C lara M orais and Daniel O rton to the
class of ’21.
C larence E dw ards had the highest average for the
first period of the year and E lizabeth and E llen Beall
followed closely.
C atherine L oftus and Lewis Colby each gave n u m
bers on th e class program on F rid ay and th e en tire
class joined in th e business m eeting and class songs.

T h e m em bers of the I.T .C . are all proud possessors

sen ted to them last T uesday n ig h t as a gift from
W . P. W alters, C ounty Y .M .C .A . S ecretary.
S u n d ay afternoon the Y .W .C .A . held an in te re st
in g discussion m eeting, using the topic, “ My ideal
for th e Y .W .C .A . for 1920-21.” P ractically all th e
girls present took p art in the discussion and some
very practical plans for cam pus service were presented.
On M onday evening the L. L . L. C hapter of the
Y .W .C .A . initiated tw enty-one new m em bers. M ore
th a n half of the m em bership ot last year have been
g rad u ated in to the senior Y .W .C .A . But with the
ad dition of these new girls the m em bership now'
totals about fifty. T h e following officers were also
installed: M aude C raig, p resident; Rornona T rip p ,
vice-president; C harlotte B rem ner, secretary: Cora
Black, treasu rer; Susan T rap p , serg ean t-at-arm s.
A large and enthu siastic crow d of young people
g ath ered in th e au d ito riu m S unday evening for the
first jo in t m eeting of th e C hristian A ssociation of the
y ear. T he speaker of the evening was M r. R alph
M cAfee, Secretary of the Portland F ederation of
C hurches, a great favorite w ith th e Chem aw a bovs at
Seabeck C onference. M r. McAfee spoke on our
c o u n try ’s need for m ore religion and the p a rt of th e
C h ristian A ssociations in m eeting this need. Tw o
splendid m usical num bers, a cornet solo by M r. Bent
and a ’cello solo by G eorge B arrett, added m uch to
the a ttra ctiv en e ss of th e ev e n in g ’s program . M r.
McAfee stated th a t in all the Y .M .C .A .’s he had
visited in the N orthw est, he had never heard as
ex cellen t m usic as he heard at C hem aw a.
LOCAL
At 2 p. m. n ex t S aturday we will meet the W il
lam ette U niversity eleven on our own g rid iro n . T h is
will be ou r first gam e this season and we hope to w in.
W h ile not u n d e rra tin g W illam ette, we believe we
have a good team ourselves— better even th a n ,W il
lam ette. S atu rd ay will put the m atter off the u n
certain ty list.
On M onday evening the senior dom estic science
girls gave a dem onstration d in n er in th e ir dep artm en t.
T he guest of honor wras Mrs. L y la h ja q u in s of Los
A ngeles, and other guests w’ere S upt. and Mrs. H all,
Mr. and Mrs. Jam es, and Mrs. Canfield. I t was a
seven-course din n er, and like all such affairs, w^as,
ow ing t o the efficient supervision of M rs. B rickell,
m ost enjoyable and le g u lar in every detail. T h is was
the first course dinnei given by these girls th is year.
L ast evening the hom e of S u p t. and M rs. H all was
the scene of an inform al g ath erin g in honor of their
d au g h ter. M rs. Jaquins, who will soon d ep art for her
home in Los A ngeles after quite a delightful visit of
some weeks at Chem aw a. A m ong those present were
M r. and M rs. Lou A ldrich and D i. and Mrs. John R
Sites of Salem . Delicious refreshm ents were served
d u rin g the evening. S u p t and M rs H ah are m ost h a p
py in the role of host and hostess and whole hearted
h ospitality aw aits at their thresh o ld . T h is was a
m em orable occasion.
