Elw ood T ow ner gave a fine talk to th e stu d en t body
at chapel S unday n ig h t.
T h is is the last issue of the year. W e will greet
von again at the com m encem ent of n ex t school year.
Mr. Bent and his able assistan t, M ajor Downie, had
their hands full th is past week and rose to the occa
sion. E v ery th in g moved off w ith snap and precision.
T h e class annual for 1920 is now on th e press and
will be issued soon. It will rival last y e a r's effort.
It is an artistic job and C hem aw a will be proud of it.
Miss W h ite, ju n io r teacher, was th e train er and
director o f the operetta and Mrs. Risser, senior te ach
er. had full charge of the class play. Both o f these
e n tertain m en ts will go dow n in history as near profes
sional.

dom estic science d ep artm en t on the evening of the
g rad u atin g exercises. Mrs Brickell and h er class
prepared a seven-course d in n er, w hich was faultlessly
prepared and served.
T h e beautiful decorations of the stage and a u d ito r
ium d u rin g the week were m ade by Miss M arie
R oberts. Each evening the decorations were different
ami m any were th e exclam ations of d elig h t w hen the
doors were opened
Miss R oberts has splendid taste,
but she outdid herself th e past week in ren d erin g the
auditorium a scene of artistic beauty.
Chem aw a is p articu larly interested in the com m ence
m ent program of the Salem H ig h School on account
of R ase O ’Brien and Elwood T ow ner, both Chemawa
stu d en ts, g ra d u a tin g . T hese young people had the
g rit and determ in atio n to stick u n til they finished.
Rose anticipates co n tin u in g her stu d ies at th e O regon
A gricultural College and Elw ood will secure a position
in some business.
'l'he class day program given by th e seniors took
place on F riday evening before com m encem ent. T he
usual class will, prophecy, and am using stu n ts took
place. T he Seniors were on one side of the stage
and the Ju n io rs the other. T he seniors finally disap
peared one by one leaving the Ju n io rs in charge.

p ictu re of th e class was presented to S u p erin ten d en t
and M rs. H all. A lso a big purse of m oney was left
in th e care of the S u p erin ten d e n t for th e erection of a
fountain to be placed in front of the new library
b u ild in g , com m em orative of the 1920 class.
A great m any of our stu d en ts have already departed
for th eir homes and to places w here they will w ork
d u rin g the sum m er.
Mr. F red Eocklvy is w ritin g a series of ai tid e s
co n cern in g C hem aw a w hich are appearing in th e O re
gon Jo u rn al. W e hope to publish them in o u r fu tu re
issues.
T h e y e a r’s w ork ju st ended has been frau g h t w ith
m uch success in every line of in stru ctio n . All C he
mawa is proud of its accom plishm ent. A splendid
body of stu d en ts have taken advantage of th e o p p o r
tu n itie s offered. New stu d en ts for another y ear are
already arriv in g .
M r. and M rs. Eoos are largely responsible for the
m agnificent se ttin g of the stage for the Japan ese
o p eretta. Mr. Eoos painted the w ings and flaps and
rendered the various scenes most realistic bv his keen
know ledge of colors and ability to handle th e b ru sh .
In d eed , this estim able couple gave freely of th e ir tim e
and professional know ledge in ad d in g to the beautiful
effect produced at the operetta.
C hem aw a duly appreciates the interest show n by
tw o very busy and big-hearted public men in the p er
sons of G overnor O lcott and Mr. F red Eockley who
gave up th eir m any responsibilities to spend a day at
o u r school and thereby lend their presence and influ
ence tow ard the u p liftin g of th is educational w ork.
It is a m ighty nice th in g for the G overnor of a great
state who has big questions before him con tin u ally to
cast them aside in order to be helpful to ou r people.
A special dem onstration d in n er was given on W ed
nesday ev en in g by m em bers of the various classes in
dom estic science in honor of P rofessor J. C. N elson,
principal of Salem H igh School, and Mrs. N elson, Mr.
T . E . M cCroskey, Secretary of the Salem Com m ercial
Club, and wife. T h e other guests w ere S u p e rin te n d
en t and M rs. H all, Prof. Devol, Mrs. Risser and Miss
Rose O 'B rien . M r. Nelson was am azed at th e scope
of tra in in g given our girls and th e high school s tu
d en ts will secure full credits in the fu tu re for th eir
work in dom estic science.
T h e annual class party given by S u p erin ten d en t
and Mrs. Flail on F riday evening previous to com
m encem ent week was a gala affair. T here w ere about
fifty g uests presen t, including the nineteen m em bers
of the 1920 class. A delightful evening w as spent
d u rin g w hich progressive rook was played, the class
gave th eir songs and some stu n ts, w hile the m em bers
of the A lum ni present gave some m usical num bers.
M arina N elson secured the prize for the girls, con
sistin g of a Chem aw a pillow , w hile A rth u r Johnson
secured th e prize for the boys in the shape of a big
beautiful p en n a n t. E laborate refresh m en ts w ere served.
