T h e Reliance L ite ra ry Society held its reg u lar m eet­
ing F rid ay , A pril 2nd, w ith P resid en t S hepard in the
ch air. A fter a short b u sin ess session a good program
was rendered. M rs. B rickell, th e official visitor, gave
a helpful and en co u rag in g talk, w hich was followed
by suggestions by the advisory m em ber.

T h e N onpareil L ite ra ry Society held its m eeting F r i­
day evening at th e reg u lar h o u r. A fter m uch business
was dispensed th e follow ing program was rendered:
Society song by m em bers; recitatio n , V ictoria San-
saver; vocal d u et, D o rcasM in th o rn and Louise Joshua;
sto ry , Rose Goff; vocal duet, E va D ubray and H attie
C ayton. T h e N . L. S. Jo lly -U p was read by Sadie
K now les, after w hich an open house debate was given
on the q u e s tio n ,“ Resolved, T h a t G irls U n d er E ighteen
Y ears of A ge Should W ear T h e ir H air in B ra id s.”

T h e m eeting of the E x celsio r Society on F rid ay
evening was full of in terest from b eg in n in g to end.
T h e g reater p art of th e evening was used in electing
officers for the last term of th e year. Several capable
candidates ran for the P re sid e n t’s chair, b u t were d e ­
feated by a shadow . T h e resu lts of th e election are
as follows: P resident, Irv in g S hepard; vice-president,
F ra n k C orbett; secretary, G eorge B arrett; treasu rer,
L ogan F an n ; serg ean t-at-arm s, W allace Beebe; cheer
leader, Elw ood T ow ner; rep o rter, A ndrew W hite.
A fter election the society proceeded w ith business d is­
cussions after w hich a short, snappy program was
rendered . Irv in g H e n d rix gave an opening address
w hich was followed by jokes by Dick Beasley. T h e
q u arte t sang a h u m o ro u s song.
D r. W edge gave
a splendid talk on p arlia m en tary rules and th e value
of leadership. T h e society adjo u rn ed after a sh o rt
talk by our advisor, Miss H e n d rix .
W inona
T h e W inonas m et on F rid ay evening and enjoyed a
good program . T h ey w ere especially pleased to have
Miss F reeland talk to them and to hear V irginia
Brickell recite “ Bill S a y s.” M adeline W ilder gave a
b rig h t little recitation very nicely and M yrtle M uree
read an E aster them e. L ena C leveland am used all
by a num ber of w ell-w ritten pen pictures. A sp irited
debate betw een Louise S ilverthorne and E d n a H ill,
affirm ative, and R uby W hite and C lara M orais, n eg a­
tive, was decided in favor of th e negatives. T he
question was, “ Resolved, T h a t th ere should be sep­
arate schools for In d ian boys and In d ian G irls .” A nna
H o lst published a snappy num ber of the W ar-W hoop,
the a d v e rtisin g section being particu larly attractive.
M adrona M a n n ’s “ P rophecy of Som e of th e W inona
G irls ” w as in te re stin g and full of original fu tu res.
T here were several other num bers given, several songs
su n g , and a few yells and ad jo u rn m en t.

Rev. B oudinot Seeley, chairm an of the H om e M is­
sion C om m ittee for th e Synod of O regon was a C he­
m awa v isitor S u n d ay . H e m ade a splendid E aster
ta lk to the Sunday school and spoke before the Y . M.
C . A . in th e evening.
T h e B oys’ S unday School T ra in in g Class has ju st
finished a course in Child P sychology and the
P rin cip les of T each in g . T h e boys who are tak in g
th is course have done very creditable w ork and d u r­
in g th e rest of th e school y ear will stu d y “ T h e S unday
School T eacher and H is T e x t B o o k .” M embers of
th e class are L ogan F a n n , C harles W illiam s, Jacob
M ynuk and F red W ilder.
T h e Y. W . C. A . had an u nusually good program
on S u n day. Special E aster m usic was given by N ancy
M atheson and by the Y. W . chorus. T h e m ain fea­
tu re of the program was an address by Rev. B oudinot
Seeley of P o rtlan d , on the subject of C onsecrated A m ­
b itio n . M r. Seeley’s talk w as very practical and m uch
ap preciated by the girls. T he room s were beautifully
decorated for the occasion w ith O regon g rap e, wild
lilies and h yacinths. Mrs. W edge, M rs. H all and M rs.
S h erm an w ere visitors.
T h e Y. W . C. A. cabinet was d elightfully entertained
at a house p arty in Salem recently. An air of m ystery
su rro u n d e d the in v itatio n and not u n til the cabinet
g irls were m et by M iss E ak in and escorted by a c ir­
cu ito u s ro u te to th e hom e of Miss J u d d , w ere they
q u ite su re of th e ir d estin atio n . U n tan g lin g a spider
web of strin g to find A pril fool jokes was one of the
diversions of the evening. G am es, eats, sleep, b u t
not too m uch of it, and then m ore eats concluded th e
