Mr. F ran cisco ’s seven-year-old son Don arrived

fath e r. H e is a b rig h t, lively little y o u n g ster.
T he new office building is rapidly assum ing shape.
W hen com pleted it will be m ost com fortable and well
arrang ed for use of the six officials who will occupy
it.
D r. C harles F. M eserve, P resid en t of th e Shaw U n i­
versity, and wife, will visit C hem aw a th is w eek. Dr.
M eserve was S u p erin ten d en t of th e H askell In stitu te
in th e early 90s.
T h e carp en ters are busy th is week rem oving th e
piazza on the so u th side of Brew er H all. It had be­
com e so ro tten , dangerous and u n sig h tly as to neces­
sitate its rem oval.
G eorge B arrett was th e ’cello soloist at an e n te rta in ­
m en t given in Salem one ev ening last week by th e
O rder of E astern S tar. R ep o rts say th a t he acquitted
him self in a m ost creditable m anner and encores were
dem anded.
T h e am ount of coal consum ed by th e pow er plant
has been reduced to about ten tons per day. T his is
occasioned th ro u g h th e c u rta ilin g of hot w ater, steam
heat and electric pow er and lig h ts, as well as w ater
generally .
D urin g these b rig h t su n sh in y days great activity is
noticed on the p art of the y ard force c u ltiv a tin g flow’er
beds, se ttin g out plants, o p eratin g law n mowers,
g ra d in g the g ro u n d s and w’o rk in g in general to b eau ti­
fy the cam pus.

M r. and Mrs. H enderson en tertain ed about th irty
of their friends from the cam pus and Salem on T h u rs­
day evening last week. It was an evening of pleasure
for w hich the people feel m uch indebted to th eir
k in d ly host and hostess.
M r. S tu a rt, the plum ber, has tem porarily relin ­
quished his job on account of rh eu m atism . C harles
W illiam s and John D ehart will each act as forem an on
th e ir respective divisions. T h e experience will be
good for these young men and the w ork in the p lu m b ­
in g d ep artm en t is expected to co n tin u e alm ost th e same
as usual. M r. Force is th e general director.
T h e representatives of th e Bureau of A nim al I n ­
d u stry have ju s t finished a com plete inspection of our
d airy barn and all stock. T h ey rep o rt ev ery th in g is
in A l condition; th a t th e cows are healthy and look
fine. T h e young heifers w hich we are in te n d in g to
add to our m ilk stock they state are e x tra fine. Joe
B ettles, th e d airy m an , is correspondingly h ap p y , for
this is th e first tim e th a t we have had a clean bill of
health from the ag ricu ltu ral d ep artm en t.

T h e chapel services on S unday evening w’ere of a
m ost pleasing character. T h e orchestra played a two-
m ovem ent num ber, C harles W illiam s sang “ Scenes
th at are B rig h te st” from the opera M aritana by W a l­
lace, M r. Bent played “ O nly a Y ear A g o ” by A lbers
as a cornet solo, th e choir sang “ Lead the C h ild re n ”
by D ungan. In closing the program S u p t. H all g av e an
especially fine talk on the m atter of conscience in our
every act—a psychological discourse of unusual in ­
terest and value.

K elly Shaw has been prom oted from oiler to shift
en gineer.
T h e d a iry m e n ’s class-room was painted and fixed
up and presents a very neat appearance.
A lbert Spearson is m aking screens for th e new co t­
tage. A lbert is a good reliable boy and a capable w ork­
m an.
T h e farm ers are stu d y in g soils and soil f e r tility ,
th ey also are ta k in g a course in th e study of fatm im ­
plem ents.
W illiam B athel, who has done such good w ork
in th e boiler room , has been prom oted to oiler in th e
en g in e room .
T h e dairym en are ta k in g up th e stu d y of forage
crops and feeding. T hese boys tak e great in terest in
th eir work.
T h e lau n d ry g irls have been very busy th e past
week g ettin g the g irls ’ new w hite sp rin g uniform s
w ashed and ironed.
T h e prevocational girls are busy on th e w ork for
w hich th ey will receive their grades for th e school
year. Mrs. K irk speaks very h ig h ly of her g irls.
G eorge T hom as and C harles Ell are busy m aking a
table for M r. D evol’s living room . T hese boys
deserve m uch credit for the splendid w ork they have
put in to it.
T h e root house has received a new coat of paint,
w hich m akes a m arked im provem ent. Roy N uckolls
and W allace Beebe deserve cred it for th e m anner in
w hich th ey superintend th e job of p ain tin g in the
absence of M r. Sanders, who is at present convalesc­
ing from a severe attack of pneum onia.
T h e harness shop has m anufactured fourteen sets
of harness th a t sell at $59.70 per set and four sets at
$32.92 per set. Beside this they have repaired 750
pairs of shoes since the first week in O ctober. T h eir
w ork is com m endable and a credit to the school. M r.
Sw’oboda is in charge of th is d ep artm en t.
T h e tailor shop is undoubtedly one of the busiest
places on th e cam pus. T h e school is very fo rtu n a te
to have such a com petent m anager as well as such
w illing w orkers. A lthough they have tu rn ed o u t
u niform s for tw o of the b r g e r com panies they have
found tim e to do all th e pressing and clean in g th at is
necessary to keep the stu d en ts looking neat and trim .
