M r. T ay lo r and his force of gardeners are busy at
p resen t c u ttin g wood.
T h e farm boys will soon have th e road to the hog
pens cleared of all ru b b ish .
Com pany " B ” is not to be outdone and all are
w earing a sm ile and a new uniform .
T h ere is a strip of land lying along the so u th side of
our farm said to be “ no m a n ’s la n d .”
T h e call for baseball players will be issued in a day
or so. O utlooks for a fast team are good.
T h e carp en ters are ru sh in g up a chicken house for
M r. C hapm an. A new fence is also being co n stru cted .
M rs. T u rn ey is a busy woman these days keeping
up her reg u lar musical w ork as well as d rillin g in co n ­
nection w ith the society w ork.
T h e m other and sister of Rose Paul have been visit •
ing at C hem aw a for several days, d u rin g th e tim e th at
Rose was recovering from pneum onia.
C aptain G us G artiez, S ergeant A ndrew W hile and
A d ju ta n t A rth u r Johnson have been in stru c tin g the
different divisions in the m anual of arm s.
W e have heard it rem arked th a t C hem aw a has a
nice bunch of horses. C redit is due M r. S tew art and
his force of boys who take such good care of them .
W allace Beebe, who has been th e able top serg ean t
of Com pany “ A ” for some tim e, has finally been
given a prom otion and is now com m anding C om pany
“ B .”
T h e gardeners have a nice lot of peas, lettu ce, an d
over 3000 cabbage plants for early use. T h ey have
also reset th e m issing p lan ts in our four-acre straw ­
berry patch.
T h e long dry spell of nearly tw o m onths seems to
be ended, as rain s are plentiful now. Dry w eather
d u rin g the w inter and sp rin g m o n th s seems stran g e in
W illam ette V alley. F arm ers have been com plaining.
T h e m atro n forces changed hands in Brew er H all
and is now u n d er th e able m anagem ent of B uchart
and S w an— two young men w ho received their art in
house cleaning from Mrs. D oherty, who had charge
of these q u arte rs for the last fifteen years.
T h e squad is w orking hard for th e A nnual In door
M eet to be held at Colum bia U niversity A pril 10th.
Spearson is keeping in shape for the mile event, and
prom ises som ething in th a t line. N uckolls is out
w ith the h u rd les and will be am ong th e leaders in this
race. Edwvards, who show ed up so well in th e class
m eet last y ear, is out in a track su it.

has been ill and confined to her room several weeks
w ith n eu ritis. Louise S ilv erth o rn e is her nurse.
P lans are being m ade by C hief E n g in eer F orce for
rem odelling th e steam heat system . H e also is m aking
up specifications for the 200 horse-pow er high p res­
su re boiler to be installed. C ongress has appropriated
$15,000 for th is purpose.
On account of the unprecedented cold w eather d u r ­
in g Decem ber w hen the school lost so m any potatoes
by being frozen, it will be necessary to purch ase 300
bushels of potatoes for p la n tin g purposes. T h e price
is ab o ut $5 per h u n d red pounds.
T he walls of the office bu ild in g are rapidly going
up. T h is b u ild in g is to be of concrete and com plete
in every way lor office use. T h e old office will be
rem odelled for an association room , tog eth er w ith
rooms for th e m andolin and g u ita r classes, as well as
for vocal classes.
T h e m any thousands of tons of cinders and residue
from the pow er house have been d istrib u ted over all
roads in and around Chem aw a. T h ey m ake a good
road when the traffic is light, but here w here tlieie is
so m uch rain and heavy traffic the road soon w ears o u t.
It is to be hoped that concrete roads may be constructed
in tire fu tu re. W ith 10,000 tons of coal and other
freig h t to haul an n u ally it takes a g o o d road to stand
it.
DOMESTIC SCIENCE NOTES
T h e Seniors of the Domestic' Science cooked and
served a d in n er for the S outh P arkw ay basketball
team . W'e are alw ays glad w hen called upon to give
a d in n er as it gives us an o p p o rtu n ity to dem onstrate
w h at we have studied in this d ep artm en t.
T h e Senior g irls of the Dom estic Science had th e
honor as well as the pleasure of e n te rta in in g H o n o r­
able H en ry C. Sicade and M rs. Sicade at din n er d u r ­
in g th eir visit here last week. Covers were laid for
ten, the follow ing guests being invited: S u p e rin te n ­
dent and M rs. H all, Dr. and M rs. B aker, M r. and
Mrs. T u rn e y . A nnie M iller acted as host and R uby
W h ite as hostess. T he d in in g room was artistically
decorated in th e Senior colors, blue and w hite.
W ednesday M rs. H all, M rs. B aker, Mrs. S h erm an,
Mrs. Cox, Mrs . Loos, M rs. K irk , M rs. V an d ag rift,
M rs. B rickell, Miss S kipton and Miss Scholder w ere
g uests at an afternoon tea in the D om estic Science d e ­
p artm e n t. D ainty sandw iches, wafers and ice cream
were served by th e Senior Domestic Science class. I t
is only th ro u g h practice th a t we secure the p ro p er
know ledge of serving, and the various functions given
by th e Dom estic Science classes are a big asset.
