Boys
T his has been an exceptionally good season w hich
closed F eb ru ary 28th in th is branch of ath letics and
the record of gam es will show th e m erits of the team .
T he O regonian and Jo u rn al have both placed th e C he
m aw a In d ian s the best team outside of the C onference
and the team has proven itself as being so. T h e com
b ination s they have met have been com posed of stars
— th at starred eith er in some college or university.
T h e South P arkw ay A thletic C lub, tooted to be the
fastest q u in te t in P ortland and w hose record showed
no defeat for three years, took two defeats from C he
mawa.
H ard ly had we g otten over th e bruises of football
and w ith com paratively no practice, w hen W illam ette
U niversity , now a m em ber of th e C onference, called
us for a gam e. N ot really in condition to m eet such
a team we took them on and held them to a 32 to 22
score. H ad the collegians filled th e second date, we
are sure it w m id have been a battle royal for a w inner.
O ut of the fourteen gam es played we lost th ree—
w in n in g eleven gam es.
Reggie IDownie, who ju st recently retu rn ed from
“ o v erseas’’ service, came in tim e to fill his old posi
tion as forw ard. W ith his experience and know ledge
of the gam e, he was th e m ainstay of th e team . H e
deserves credit for he is the h ig h est point w in n er for
his team . In the final gam e he n etted 20 p oints of
th e 34 for his team .
G eorge N ix , the o th er v eteian of the team , proved
him self the “ old re lia b le .” W ith his w eight and
stre n g th lie was th e main defense of his team , and
was used successfully as a ru n n in g g u ard . W ith his
ability to shoot goals lie was second as a point w inner.
Joe Bettles, the m idget forw ard, played a fast gam e
and by his-sp eed won m any praises. A t tim es he
shot some difficult baskets. W ith an o th er y e a rs’ e x
perience, Joe will have an adv an tag e, • this being his
initial year.
Irv in g S hepard, the raw recru it on the team , was a
find. H e has developed into a real good cen ter. H is
defensive playing and shooting of baskets gave him an
edge over Johnson who started as center. Shepard
stands th ird in points.

N uckolls, captain of the team , was handicapped
som ew hat on account of an injured wrist and conse
q u en tly did not play in his usual form . How ever, at
tim es lie show ed speed and a good defense.
L iljegren was a stro n g su b stitu te and in the last
two gam es replaced N uckolls at g u ard . H e is g ettin g
onto the gam e readily and gives prom ise of m aking
th e 'v arsity as a reg u lar in another season.
A rth u r Johnson, who has been acting as sub, had
the m isfortune to h u rt his leg quite badly last fall
T his has been a great hindrance. Jack know s the
gam e and would have been on the regular line-up, but
his leg seemed to be a draw back.
P o in ts m ade by each m em ber of the team th ro u g h
out the season are: IDownie, 110; N ix, 109; S hepard,
76; Bettles, 74; N uckolls, 18; IJlje g re n , 2; Johnson, 2.
G irls
M arion W asson, forw ard, has been high point
“ m a n ” th ro u g h o u t the season. H er work has been
very creditable and her basket shooting the sensation
of the season. Rose O ’Brien, her side p artn e r, has
not played up to her usual form in the art of throw ing
baskets, but her w ork on the floor-in gettt lg th e ball
was excellent and as captain has been very valuable to
the team .
W hile th is season was the first tim e in basketball
circles for our two centers, E leanor H ank and M aude
P olls, y et they have m ade a splendid record for th e m
selves and played creditable ball in all four gam es.
Tw o good guard s are as essential as any other posi
tion on th e team . In Rose Goff, Effie IDavis and Je s
sie C levland we had three girls w ho could play the
position well and in all b u t one gam e they m anaged
to hold th eir opponents to a few baskets less than our
num ber. If little “ Jeff” was a few inches taller her
equal w ould be hard to find.
T h e season ju s t closed has been a most successful
one and the g irls deserve cred it for th e persistent
efforts set forth in practicing to m ake a record for
C hem aw a-and th e basketball team .
C aptain C hoate of the track team has his squad out
these evenings in the absence of Coach Sanders, who
is ill.
