ing and sin g in g , but could not m ake the necessary

T h e E xcelsiors e n tertain e d at th e ir an n u al open
session on T h u rsd ay ev ening last. All four societies
besides num erous o th er guests were present. T h e
featu re was a farce, “ Coon T ow n T h irteen C lu b ,” in
w hich th e boys p ortrayed th e an tics of a colored club
at a banquet. T h e cast wTas well m ade up and carried
on in a sem i-professional m an n er, and so wrell acted
th a t the large audience was convulsed th ro u g h o u t.
T h e o th e r num bers on the program were good and
showed careful p rep aratio n . In fact the en tire e n te r
tain m en t reflected cred it on th e individual actors as

GIRLS LOSE TO SILVERTON
In a “ nip and tu c k ” gam e our girls lost to the fast
Silverton high school team on th e Silverton floor last
F riday evening 16 to 14.
T h e court was like ice and n eith er team could play
up to form for all speed was checked and team wrork
was m ade im possible by th e slickness of th e floor.
N evertheless some very accurate basket shooting was
displayed by both, Johnson and C ram er sta rrin g for
S ilverton w ith 8 points each w hile M arrion W asson
was high point girl for Chem aw a w ith 11 points.
A retu rn gam e w ill be plaved on th e home floor F eb
ru a ry 28 when our girls prom ise to give a good account
of them selves.
On F riday evening th e girls of the N onpareil L ite r
ary Society w ho did not accom pany th e basketball
team to S ilverton, held a snappy business m eeting.

T h e E xcelsior L iterary Society m et in th e academ ic
building on F rid ay evening, Feb. 13.
T h e chief
event of the evening was the election of the follow ing
officers: E . A . T ow ner, president; G . T . B arrett,
vice-president; L . S. F a n n , secretary; C. J. E der,
treasu rer; C. M cDaniels, sergeant-at-arm s, and C. A.
W illiam s, reporter. A fter th e election of officers
F ran cis Davis favored th e society w’ith a violin solo.
T h is wras followred by a q u arte t num ber. Mr. G rey-
earth , who wras v isitin g th e society, gave a very in te r
estin g and helpful talk on co-operation and unity in
w ork. Mr. B arrett, wdio was the critic for the evening,
gave some good advice and th e society adjourned.

A lthough a num ber of th e W inona m em bers a tte n d
ed o u r gam e at Silverton on F rid ay evening a very
creditable program was given by those who rem ained
at hom e. It was a L eap-Y ear V alentine program and
the roll call was answ’ered by each girl giving a p ro
posal; m any original fu n n y form s were used. T h e
newly elected president, Ju lia Grom off, gave a good a d
dress; M adeline W ilder had a w’ell-prepared V alentine
recitation; V iola Byers read a them e on the S ta rt of
St. V alentine; C atherine M adsen recited and M arian
and C h arlotte Brem ner and A nna Belgarde sang T h e
V alentine P ostm an. As th ree of th e four debaters were
absent, the one m em ber present challenged any vol
u n teers; V iola Beyers accepted th e challenge and a r
gued th a t “ W om en have as m uch rig h t to propose as
men h a v e .” E d n a H ill spoke for the negative, but the
ju d g es gave the decision to th e affirm ative. T he house
was th ro w n open for general debate and some sp irited
w ork followed. V eltha F razier, a retu rn ed m em ber,
w7as called upon and gave a splendid talk on C hem aw a’s
o p p o rlu n ities. T here were several volunteer num bers
and the society adjourned w’ith th e color song.
DOMESTIC SCIENCE NOTES
T h e four Senior girls who w ork in th e Domestic
Science prepared and served a d in n e r for the g irls ’
basketball team before they left for Silverton.
T h e experience gained by the dom estic science girls
caterin g for the N onpareil party was of real profit for
th e girls, especially for A nna M iller, who has am bi
tions of becoming a specialist in F ren ch p astry.
