In w liat was called th e fastest gam e played on the
hom e floor th is season, C hem aw a defeated the fast Mt.
A ngel q u in te t by th e score of 42 to 27. T h e gam e
w’as a fast, clean one from sta rt to finish, and aroused
m uch sp irit at tim es. T h e first h alf ended w ith the
score in favor of th e visitors, b u t our boys were not to
be d au n ted an d cam e back stro n g and th e score shows
th e resu lt. N ix at g u a rd played an exceptionally
good gam e, m ak in g 16 p o in ts. Dow nie and Bettles
w ere not playing in th eir old form b u t never-the-less
scored from tim e to tim e. N uckolls w ent out of the
gam e in the second half on account of slig h t in ju ries.
H e w as su b stitu ted by L iljeg ren , who prom ises to be
come a real “ dark h o rse .” T h is m akes th e third
successive victory for Chem aw a.

On last S atu rd ay our boys defeated th e fast Pacific
U niversity team in a snap p y , clean gam e. T h e score
at th e end of th e stru g g le stood 39 to 22 in C hem aw a’s
favor. S hepard, B ettles, N ix , N uckolls and Downie
com prised C hem aw a’s lin e-u p and each played a good,
steady gam e. Pacific has a good team and each man
is a ball player th a t is h ard to beat. T h e good team
w ork and accurate basket sh o o tin g is w hat won th e
gam e for Chem aw a.
A t th e b eg in n in g th in g s looked ra th e r d o u b tfu l,
bu t after th e invincible q u in te t had “ w arm ed u p ”
th ere w as no doubt in a n y b o d y ’s m ind as to who was
going to w in. C hem aw a featu red w ith successful
shots from all angles of the floor and excellent team
w ork.
On F eb ru ary 3 we play P . U . a re tu rn gam e at
F o rest G rove. O u r team w ill play th ree gam es on
th is trip , th e A m erican L egion team of V ancouver
on th e 4 th , and the D u n n iw ay P ark team of P o rtlan d
a t th e Y . M. C. A . b u ild in g on the 5th.
T h e g irls’ basketball team has been practicing faith
fully in p rep aratio n for th e ir first gam e th is season
ag ain st th e Salem high school here th is W ednesday
ev en in g . T h e girls will play a retu rn gam e in Salem

anced m eal for an adult by an algebra form ula— th a t’s
correlation!
D uane K im ball read an original story on F rid a y ’s
program . T h e unexpected conclusion was p ro d u c
tive of m uch applause.
R uby W h ite represented the class on the Sunday
assem bly program w ith a good recitation of “ A F o o l”
o n e of S ervice’s R hym es of a Red Cross M an.
M arina N elson sang her little “ C ro w ” song for the
class on F rid a y and th e g ills ’ q u a rte t gave a very
p leasing num ber. R uby W h ite gave a recitation.
I t w as freshm en week to sweep th e hall and stair-
w av. T h e S eniors got m ixed and sw ept. T h e F re sh
m en cam e la ter and sw ept again— c a rry in g away a
panful of d irt.
G eorge B erry and A ndrew W hite were on the p ro
gram for a dialogue. A ndrew was absent so of course
it could not be. G eorge prom ised to be ready n e x t
F rid a y — unless he was absent.
H IG H SCHOOL NOTES

m ost recovered and is once m ore able to attend his
classes at the business college.
A llan S hepard, who cartoons the basketball gam es
for us here, and other announcem ents of school activ
ities, received honorable m ention in a poster contest
at th e Salem H igh School d u rin g Good E nglish week.
