T h e E xcelsior L iterary Society held its reg u lar
m eeting in room 8 w ith V ice-P resident Beyers in th e
chair on F rid ay evening, Jan u ary 2nd. T he follow ing
new officers were elected: P resid en t, John Beyers;
vice-president, Logan F a n n ; secretary , C harles E der:
trea su re r, G eorge B arrett; serg ean t-at-arm s, Percy
M in en n g er; rep o rter, D uane K im ball; yell leader, J a
cob My link. A fter discussion of business we ad journed
until F rid ay , Jan u ary 9 th , w hen we discussed th e p a r
ty and other business and th e follow ing program was
rendered: In stru m en ta l d u e t, F ra n cis Davis, W allace
Beebe; dialogue, F red Jo h n so n , Jo h n D ehart; story,
“ H ow 1 Spent My V acation L ast S u m m e r,” Logan
F an n ; and the question box, w hich aroused much
m errim ent. A fter a few encouraging rem arks by the
critic we adjourned.

T h e W inona Society w as entertain ed on F rid ay
evening by the Rose G ro u p , A nn Sexton in charge.
A debate on the ed ucational value of the cu rren t
m agazines as com pared w ith th a t of the movies was
th e feature of th e evening. Mabel Blodget and Beulah
W h ite won for th e m agazines, defeatin g M arina N el
son and C arrie A nderson. Ju lia Gromoff sang very
p leasan tly and M innie C u rran played a g u ita r solo.
L illie Dixon gave pen p ictu res, Rose Fischer a story,
an d A nn S exton a recitation and A nna P eratrovich
read a them e. T h e m eeting closed w ith th e usual
songs and yells, after a little talk by M rs. E ato n , the
official visitor.
R eliance
T h e reg u lar m eeting o f th e R eliance Society held
on F riday evening was devoted to rehearsing num bers
for the special program on F rid ay , Jan u ary 16th.

has strayed.

T h a t question box yielded a rare lot of questions on
F rid a y . T h e Senior boys found out it is really leap
year. T h e girls took ad vantage and proposed. Som e
were accepted on the spot.
T he three Senior girls who have occasionally helped
o u t at teaching w hen a teacher w a sa b se n t— Rose Goff,
M arguerite C ham berlin and A nnie M iller— were e n
te rta in e d at d in n er on Sunday by Mr. Devol.
S u p e rin te n d e n t and M rs. H all invited the cast of
th e “ V arsity C o a ch ,” together w ith the orchestra
and the “ sta g e-h an d s” over to T h e H ouse after the
play. All enjoyed the o p p o rtu n ity to talk it all over
as they ate the cake and drank the p u n ch .
A brief volunteer program was given at “ Class
P e rio d ” on F rid ay . A nnie M iller read a C hristm as
them e, an original story; C harles W illiam s sang “ Pal
O ’ M in e;” G us G artiez told a d arkey soldier story;
M arina N elson gave a g u ita r solo, and Ruby W hite
gave every one a h earty laugh w ith her

recitation.
T h e class of ’20 were most loud in th e ir praise of the
N ew Y ear d in n er ex tended to them by th e class of
’21. T h e decorative schem e of bluebirds, the m usic,
th e “ Senior New Y ear R eso lu tio n s” (as interpreted by
th e Ju n io rs), and the happy sp irit of the entertainers,
m ade a perfect se ttin g for the excellent repast. No
w onder the Seniors sang “ R ah, R ah, the Junior Class,

T h e E xcelsiors never gave a better party than th a t
given on S aturday eve last in the gym . T he decora
tions w ere superb and n o th in g w as left undone th at
the boys th o u g h t w ould add to the pleasure of th e ir
g u ests. A bountiful repast was served at tables seat
ing 115 persons. M rs. Brickell and her class in do
m estic science prepared and served the dainty and
palatable refreshm ents.
R eggie Dow nie acted as
toastm aster and called on a num ber of those present
for inform al talks. A d elig h tfu l evening was spent in
social intercourse. Miss H en d rix is th e advisor for
th is society.
M r. C lark S tew art, of Salem , entered on du ty as
assistan t farm er last w eek. H e will occupy the farm
e r ’s cottage.
D r. Roy H . Baker, field d en tist, arrived at Chem aw a
y esterd ay for an indefinite stay to exam ine and care
for the s tu d e n ts ’ teeth.
