is connected w ith the U. S. N avy and has ju st re ­
tu rn ed from a trip to S o u th A m erica.
R ainy w eather and short days in terfered w ith the
flag cerem ony, but on Sunday evening th e en tire
battalion w as out. I t was a p retty sig h t. W e will
be glad w hen sp rin g w eather com es so th a t our m ili­
ta ry exercises can be held outside. D u rin g th e rain y

Since th e holidays the boys, particularly th e sm all­
er ones, use th eir spare m om ents playing m arbles.
Mr. Bent has staged a m arble contest between the
Sm all Boys and B rew er H all, the w inners to engage
th e M itchell H all boys.

M cBride in “ apple p ie ” order. B rew er H all, how ­
ever, was not up to its usual appearance. Boys in

T h e ban on influenza has been raised in Salem and
the business college and hig h school pupils started in
at reg u la r w ork M onday, m uch to th eir d elig h t. These
p u p ils have lost about six weeks on account of influ­
enza in the city of Salem . Chem aw a has been very
fo rtu n a te as we have not had a case since O ctober.
M rs. San Brace, of P o rtlan d , spent p a rt of two days
at C hem aw a last week visiting her m any friends here
am ong em ployes and stu d e n ts. Mrs. Brace was a
very popular teacher at C hem aw a for a num ber of
y ears and resigned last sum m er to live in P o rtlan d
w here Mr. Brace, w ho was pro p erty clerk here, had
entered in to business
O u r stu d e n ts have been m issing th eir tow n day for
some weeks. N ex t S atu rd ay is boys’ day and they
no d o u b t will be perm itted to go. T h ere has been no
com plaint by the stu d e n ts on account of th e restric­
tio n , y et a trip to Salem and the movies and shopping
is one of the g reatest pleasures in th eir life at C hem a­
wa. It would Le a difficult m atter to find a b etter lot
of stu d e n ts as a w hole th an are a tten d in g Chem aw a.
L ast S unday evening th e exercises in chapel were
up to th e usual high stan d ard and proved m ost e n te r­
ta in in g in every way. T h e orch estra played “ A
D ream of S p rin g ” by F la th , the O ctette G irls san g a
“ S p rin g S o n g ” on th e “ M elodie in F ” by R u b in ­
stein , and on request th e choir sang “ Joan of A rc ”
by W ells. Sup*. H all delivered a splendid discourse,
m ainly to th e stu d en ts, p erta in in g to th e vital im p o rt­
ance of m ak in g every m om ent co u n t, especially in
th e ir academ ic w ork. T h ey will be a wise to rem em ­
ber w hat he told them .
