on. I d o n ’t know how I will ever repay you for the
profitable in stru ctio n th at I received at school.
I
w ent up to be qualified for th e officers’ train in g cam p
over here and passed, b u t ow ing to th e sig n in g of the
arm istice th e cam ps will be d isco n tin u ed . N ev erth e
less I cam e in to do w hat is asked of me and take
w hat is given me. I have done alm ost every kind of
w ork since jo in in g the colors, and found it all very
in terestin g . It kept my m ind occupied.
I suppose you have heard considerable of the pow
erful new L iberty battle-plane. W ell, I had an o ppor
tu n ity to go up in one w ith a very w ild pilot, so you
can im agine w hat k in d of a ride I had in such a pow
erful plane. A fter we were up several h u n d red feet
and I was busy enjoying th e w onderful scenery below
th e pilot tu rn ed about and sm iled and at the sam e m o
m ent nosed h er for th e g ro u n d . I was sta n d in g in
th e observer’s seat, b u t it was no tim e before I found
m yself dow n in the cockpit, as th e w ind pressu re was
so great I could not stan d up w hen it was headed for
th e g ro u n d . But w hen it w as leveled out and we
w ent at great speed over th e co u n try it was like rid
ing on a large boat. I have been u p in other ships,
but none th a t com pared w ith the L iberty plane. I
will try and tell you of our life here in o th er letters,
as we will have considerable m ore tim e to ourselves
now.
I h ear th a t the S panish Influenza is doing m uch
dam age over th ere. W e have heard of it and th a t is
ju st about all. I hope you will conquer it at th e
schoo l.
I have not heard from G eorge P eters for some tim e.
H e m ay be on his w ay hom e, as a good m any aero
squadrons are leaving. F rom w hat th e papers state,
it will be only a m atter of a sh o rt tim e before we will
all be back. You u n d ersta n d th a t I am at th e final
field w here th e pilots com plete th e ir courses— m ostly
acrobatic and com bat w ork.
I will not be able to w rite m uch longer, as it is tim e
I was in bed. T h e w eather is ra in y an d th ere is lots
of m ud. T h e F ren ch m ud has th a t of O regon badly
beaten.

O ur blacksm iths have been busy of late rep airin g
th e school trash car.
T h e detail for th e girls changed on Ja n u ary 6th
and all are doing well in th e ir new positons.
E lizab eth R einville w ent to P o rtlan d recently for a
few d a y s’ visit w ith her m arried sister.
A fter passing th e holidays w ith th e “ hom e fo lk s,”
M iss R u th Brewer is again at O. A . C. p u rsu in g her
stu d ies.

M r. R atzb u rg . M r. T u rn e r, and a lot of boys have
had q u ite a tim e of it of late te ach in g the new lot of
horses th e ir nam es.
All of us are pleased to see th e ch an g e in th e
w eather. It is now m uch m ilder and th e rain m ay
assist h ealth conditions.
Of late th e tailors have been m ak in g nearly all the
uniform tro u sers for th e boys. T h is stan d s for a lot
of w ork, as w e ’ve got a good big list of boys.
Jo h n P a rr took his b ro th er R obert hom e to P en d le
ton a few d ays days ago. R obert had been seriously
ill for some tim e. W e are glad to n ote his im p ro v e
m ent.
T h e senior class g irls in dom estic science m ade th e
cakes foi th e Y . M. and Y . W . p arty last w eek. T h e
cakes w ere certainly a cred it to th e g irls and th e ir
d ep artm en t.
In response to a telegram tellin g of illness in th e
fam ily R obert Downie left early last week for his hom e
in T acom a. I t is hoped th e afflicted will im prove and
he will re tu rn to school soon.

refre h m en ts helped pass an evening all too sw iftly.
T h e task of in stallin g a new system of d raft pipes
has engaged th e tim e and a tten tio n of th e m em bers of
th e en g in eerin g d ep artm en t ol late. I t is hoped th a t
ere long ev ery th in g will again be in “ sh ip sh a p e ” in
th is im p o rtan t d ep artm en t.
A fter the spelling contest of last week M rs. R isser
treated th e spellers and th e various society officers to
d d ic o u s refreshm ents. T h e luncheon w as held in th e
dom estic science d ep artm en t and th e affair was m em
orable an d enjoyable in every way.
Of late th e re has been a reorganization of our fire
com painies. G eorge T hom as is captain of C om pany
N o. 1 and Jam es C hoat is captain of C om pany N o. 2.
T h is is an im p o rtan t m atter and we are pleased to
note th a t these com panies have w orth y and dependable
cap tain s.
