M r. M udge, one of our neighbors, is now w orking
at th e school in the capacity of assistan t carp en ter.

T h e electrician, M r. M aw yer, has ju s t p u t outside
lig h ts on th e dom estic science b u ilding. T h is was a
needed im provem ent.
T h e blacksm ith has ju s t com pleted th e task of te a r
in g out th e old track s in th e dairy and horse barns
and p u ttin g in new ones.
A force of m en and boys have been engaged cf late
in d o in g som e rep air w ork on our h eatin g system —
fixing the steam pipes, etc.
On last rep o rts John Brow n, form erly assistan t ca r
p en ter at Chem aw a, was still w o rking in a ship y ard
in P ortlan d and g e ttin g along nicely.
A t th e last m eeting of th e seniors Joe M att was
adopted as th e m ascot of the class. Joe already show s
th a t he feels th e w eight of such an honor.
T h e gard en ers have a fine crop of popcorn th is year.
I t is stored in th e drier and can h ard ly w ait until
popping tim e—say along about C hristm as.
T h e S tu d en t Buffet is located in Brew er H all and it
is doing q u ite a business. It opened on W ednesday
last an d its bid for patro n ag e m et a h earty response.
Miss C ath erin e W rig h t, d a u g h te r of our chief engi
neer, has been v isitin g relatives here to r th e past week
or tw o. S he expects to re tu rn to P o rtlan d before
long.
T h e Y. W . C. A. held a m eeting on S u nday a fte r
noon and th e Y . M. C. A . in th e ev en in g . Both
m eetings w ere well atten d ed . N ex t S u n d ay evening

E ast S atu rd ay evening the large stu d en ts held th eir
bi-m onthly social. Several of the soldier boys from
V ancouver B arracks rem ained over for th e “ good
tim e .” It proved an enjoyable affair.
T h e g ir ls ’ basketball team s are now p racticin g
vigorously. M cBride and W inona H alls each have
two team s, and consequently tw o evenings a t th e gym
are allotted to th e team s of each hall each w eek.

T h e carp en ter force has been busy ever since th e
opening of school this fall rep airin g w indow s and
doors, th e replacing of screens, etc ., in fact, ev ery
th in g im aginable has m ade a dem and upon th e ir tim e
an d energy.
T h e various literary societies held m eetings last
F riday evening. T hese were th e first m eetings pos
sible for th e societies in some weeks ow ing to the
prevalence of S panish Influenza. All societies had a
good atten d an ce.
T h e Sigm a P hi girls m et in business session on S u n
day eve, at the hom e of M rs. H all, for th e purpose of
electing officers for the follow ing six m onths. A nnie
E oftus w as m ade president; Rose O ’B rien, vice-presi
dent; C ath erine Reed, secretary; A gnes S tew art, treas
urer; Ju lia F ra tis, chaplain.

last T h u rsd ay evening for the purpose of w orking u p e n
thusiasm am ong th e stu d en ts for the gam e on S atu rd ay
betw een o u r team and one from V ancouver B arracks.
R obert D ow nie, president of the stu d e n t body, was
ch airm an . T w o yell leaders were elected, one for the
boys and one for th e girls— Percy M inesinger and Effie
Davis. E ach society was called upon for some special
“ p ep ” of an approved bran d , and all m ade good w ith
“ hot stu ff.’ ’ T h e m eeting was in every way m ost su c
cessful.
