G IR LS’ M USICAL CLUB
On the evening of Tuesday, June 4th, the Girls’
Mandolin and Guitar club, under direction of Mr.
Eoos, gave a program which was most unique in every
way. When the curtain in the auditorium went up
there was music heard in the distance and all looked
across the ocean for its pretty producers. In the dis
tance could be seen the good Red Cross ship “ Che-
mawa, ’ ’ loaded down with the members of this musical
organization, who wore the uniforms of Red Cross
nurses. Nearer and nearer the good ship approached
until finally it was docked and the nurses with their
instruments disembarked. As the ship came in the
girls were playing, but immediately after the landing
they found themselves in the midst of our wounded
“ over there” —somewhere in France—and they took
up the roll of entertainers as well as angels of mercy.
Here began the concert proper and in every way it
was most pleasing. Agnes Swanson was the vocal
soloist, as well as a member of club. On the refrain
of her number she was joined by Julia Gromoff and
they earned the enthusiastic recall which greeted theii
efforts. At the close of the concert they embarked on
the “ Chemawa” for home and there was music in the
air as they and their staunch ship faded from sight.
Mr. Loos originated the idea of the ship, painted
his own ocean scenery, wrote all the music, and was
director in general, and his novel entertainment will
long be remembered. He gives thanks to the carpen
try department for the splendid co-operation given him
in the building and launching of the ship, “ Che
mawa.” The program follows:

IN SPECTIO N
A general inspection of quarters, the hospital, sew
ing-room, school building, domestic science, dining
room and bakery took place on Wednesday morning.
First the different companies of girls inspected the
boys’ quarters after which the boys visited the quar
ters of the girls. During the inspection those whose
quarters were under scrutiny stood at “ attention” by
their beds. After inspection of all the students’ quar
ters all went in a body on a visit to dining-room, bak
ery and hospital, sewing-rooms, domestic science de
partment and the academic building. At the various
departments everything was found to be scrupulously
clean and orderly to the minutest detail—it is a
pleasure to say it. In many places there were splen
did displays of handicraft of the students, in many
instances constituting testimonials of large dimensions.
The visitors who made the tour of inspection were
both surprised and pleased. “ Superb’ ’ is the adjective
to use in describing the finding of the inspectors.
GYM NASTIC E X H IB IT
At 2:45 in the afternoon of Wednesday there was a
physical culture exhibition in the gymnasium. This
was under the direction of Mr. Bent, our disciplinar
ian, and the various drills and exhibitions were
declared on all hands to have been the best ever seen
at Chemawa. It was really most excellent. The
