Before a large crow d of en th u siastic spectators, C he­
m awa defeated the U niversity team for the second
tim e th is season in Salem last S atu rd ay . On account
of m a k in g tra in connections th e gam e w as called at
th e close of the six th in n in g . T h e w ork of Bettles,
o u r “ so u th -p a w ” pitcher, w as exceptionally good,
h o ld in g th e collegians to one lone h it an d strik in g
o u t seven m en. Speas, p itc h in g for W illam ette,
fanned six men and was clouted for eight solid hits.
H en ry D avis, C hem aw a’s th ird sacker, played his
usual good gam e, assisting in several plays an d p u ll­
ing one bee-liner th a t looked like a safe h it out of th e
air w ith th e grace and ease of a big leaguer. W apato
got the only h it made by the C ollegians and m anaged
to w ork around to th ird , w here he rem ained w hile
B ettles th rew one o u t at first and benched th e other.
A n um ber of our boys and th e band w itnessed th e
contest. A loyal bunch th ey w ere and held th eir own
in the ro o tin g section against th e W illam ette backers,
and cheered th e ir team on to victory. W allace A dam s
of W illam ette um pired the contest. H is decisions
w ere m ost satisfactory.
W illam ette will play here on th e 18th of M ay.
N ex t S a tu rd a y our Loys will play th e S tate Prison
team in Salem . A close contest is expected.
