E ast week G eorge N ix and Daniel O rton m ade a
general round about Brew er H all fixing up all needed
repairs.
B ertha G rim es goes daily from her w ork at th e d o
m estic science d ep artm en t to give lesson to the hos
pital cooks.
M arie Stone, who has been su p erv isin g the cooking
at th e hospital for the past m onth, is very successful
w ith her w ork.
T h e gardeners com pleted th e ir job of p ru n in g the
trees in the o rch ard last w eek. T hey have been busy
there for some tim e.
A fter th e Brew er and S an d ers’ cottage repairs are
com plete another u p -to -d ate cottage will be added to
C hem aw a’s cam pus.
A w arning call of ten m inutes is now given for the
boys each line-up. A g reat deal of im provem ent in
prom ptness is show n.
A car load of lum ber arrived last w eek, w hich will
be used for th e onion house and for several o th e r re
pairs about the cam pus.
T h e painters, who were delayed for some tim e on ac
co u n t of bad w eather, have now finished p a in tin g the
ex terio r of the teach ers’ club.
O w ing the shortage of help at the harness shop
th e needed sets of harness will be a little late in arriv in g
at the different reservation schools.
R eginald Downie has taken over th e m arching of the
girls to and from th e academ ic b u ild in g . A great
im provem ent is noticed in th e ir lines.
T h e Y. M. C. A . and th e Y. W . C. A . held th eii
jo in t social in th e academ ic b u ild in g on T h u rsd ay last
after Bible classes. A good all-aro u n d tim e was had.
T h e landscape gardeners m ade th eir general ro u n d
of sp ray in g all rose bushes last w eek. I t looks as
th o u g h we are going to have p len ty of roses th is
sum m er.
E ast week M r. Ross spent m uch of his tim e in se t
tin g out rose slips along the m ain drivew ay th ro u g h
th e school. Some tim e in th e fu tu re you will not know
the place.
T h e dom estic art classes are doing good w ork u n d er
th e in stru ctio n s of M rs. Loos. T h ere will be m any
pieces of fine needle w ork on ex h ib it at the close of
th is school term .
A ccording to the recent spell of good w eather, the
bleachers will soon be moved in to place an d the base
ball diam ond scraped. T h e boys are g e ttin g the base
ball fever already and are m aking use of th e diam ond.
E ast week one of our basketball team s jo urneyed to
Salem and defeated the Salem H ig h School second
team by a score of 25 to 14. O ur boys played a good
gam e, but did not ex e rt them selves any in ru n n in g up
th e score.
E ast week M r. Bent took up th e gym w ork of the
p u p ils. T h e boys report from 7:30 to 8:30 a. m. and
th e g irls from 4 to 5 p. m. T h ey use m any different
gam es aside from the reg u lar physical exercises and
th e pupils are very m uch interested in th eir w ork.
E ast week M rs. Brace gave a talk to th e academ ic
p u p ils on ‘ T h e O rigination of Dogs and th e C ountries
from W hich they C am e;” M rs. R isser told th e story
of Joan of A rc; Miss W hite talked on “ T h e U sage of
th e F lag on D ifferent O ccasions. ’ ’ T hese talks were all
very in terestin g .

O w ing to th e fact th a t a read in g room was badly
needed at Brew er H all it was m ade necessary to move
the barber shop to a sm aller room . T h e barber shop
is now alm ost com pleted and the read in g room is well
u n d er w ay. T h e boys appreciate th is change very
m uch and th e reading room will be used a g reat .deal.
O n S unday last th e basketball boys broke train in g
table. T h e good cooks and th e boys sat dow n to a
ch icken d in n e r w hich w as p u t up by M iss S k ip to n .
T h e boys say th a t they know of no way in w hich to
express th e ir th a n k s to the g irls for th eir k indness in
cooking for th e ball team . T hey surely know how
to prepare th e m eals and m ade a health y looking
bunch of the basketball boys.

M arcella Silvers, who attended school here last fall,
died a t h er hom e at K lam ath F alls recently.
T h e dairy boys killed and vealed a y o u n g calf and
sold it to a butch er in Salem fo rl8 cen ts a pound.
Cecil R ussell slipped and fell com ing o u t of chapel
last M onday and broke a bone in her rig h t w rist.
T h e Ju n io rs seem to take m ore th a n usual interest
in C hem istry, for th e ir averages are above usual.
M artin Colby is now in F ran ce w ith th e U. S. M ar
ines, 12 thC om panv, A m erican E x p ed itio n ary F orces.
T h e g irls are glad to get into th e gym nasium again
for physical train in g . W e need the drill and we enjoy
th e gam es.
T h e seventh grade has a corn plant seven inches tall
w hich has had no p lant food except w hat w as stored in
th e seed. T hey are w atching to see how large the
p lan t will grow on its own food.
