w as held in th e Ju n io r class room . Roll call and
new business follow ed in order, after w hich th e so
ciety ex ten d ed a v o te of th a n k s to M rs. M cC rosson,
w ho p resented a song to th e R eliance Society. A
challenge w as sent to th e E x celsio rs for a sp ellin g
m atch, w hich was accepted. T n e program being
postponed till th e n ex t m eeting, th e society d ev oted
th e rest of th e ho u r to p racticin g th e ir new songs
and yells. G reat en th u siasm was aroused by the w ay
the m em bers took p ir t in the sin g in g and y elling.

given. In th e absence of th e presid en t, L au ra Squi-

T h e N onpareil Society m et at th e usual ho u r and
place. O w ing to the unavoidable absence of both
the president an d vice-president, th e secretary , Z elina
B rigam , filled th e ch air very creditably. T h e m u si
cal p art of th e program , w hich w as carefully p lan n ed
in honor of th e ap p ro ach in g b irth d ay of C harles D ick
ens, was carried over to th e n ex t reg u lar m eetin g on
account of th e illness of th e p ian ist. A side from th e
ro u tin e b u sin ess th e p arliam en tarian , L eona Jo h n ,
read the co n stitu tio n and fifteen w ide-aw ake new
m em bers accepted th e pledge so sincerely th a t
th e old m em bers felt they had fifteen new w orkers.
Cecilia M cC lung, one-fifteenth of th e th e “ New N o n
p a re ils,” gave oral rep ro d u ctio n of “ S crooge’s C h ris t
m as” from D ickens’ “ C hristm as C a r o l / ’ u n u su a lly
well and her th o ro u g h p rep aratio n w as very a p p a re n t.
A gnes S tew art, w ith equal m erit, recited “ T h e Ivy
G re e n ” by th e sam e au th o r. O ur official visitor w as
M rs. Loos.

w here they w ere m issing on the outside lig h ts.
T h e g irls ’ basketball team will play the Silverton
H ig h girls on our floor S atu rd ay . O ur g irls are w o rk
ing h ard and faithfully and hope to receive the victory.
T h e first year dom estic science class took up the
stu d y of starches an d starch testin g last w eek. T h ey
tak e m uch in te re st in th eir w ork, w hich m akes it easier
tor them .
T h e E xcelsior L iterary Society held a special m eet-
ingon W ednesday for th e purpose of p rep arin g for th e
program w hich will be given by the school on W a s h
in g to n ’s B irth d ay .
T h e C hem aw a stu d e n ts w ho are a tte n d in g Salem
H ig h School sp e n t th e w eek-end w orking in various
places about th e cam pus, w aiting for th e b eg in n in g of
the second sem ester.
Ju lia M ills and O ra D uncan, who now have c h a rg e
of all th e cleaning at M cBride H all, take m uch pride in
th e ir w ork and deserve m uch credit for th e w ay in
w hich the building is kept.
T h e A division academ ic pupils were en tertained
last T h u rsd a y afternoon by Miss R oberts, who spoke
on th e topic, “ S ubm arines in th e W ar Z o n e .” I t w as
an u p -to -d ate talk an d very in terestin g .

th a t he is at present in the N aval H ospital at M are I s
lan d , convalescing from an operation.
O n T h u rsd a y last E lsie Spokane w as called to th e
bedside of her ste p fa th e r who is ill at P en d leto n .
H e r friends will m iss h er greatly, but she says th a t
she w ill re tu rn as soon as she can be spared.
T h is afternoon o u r second team will play th e M t
A ngel College team on our floor. O ur second team
have not yet been seen in actio n jb u t have been faith fu l
in th eir practice and will p u t up a good fast gam e.
On S atu rd ay our ’V arsity basketball team w ill play
th e U niversity of O regon at E ugene. W e w ere d e
feated by them on o u r floor, but are practicin g h ard er
than ever w ith a view of w iping out th a t defeat.
L et us hope so.
