Minnie Columbia and William Klaney returned to
school on Saturday.
The regular student body social in the gym on Sat
urday night was especially enjoyed by all.
Doctor Fulkerson, agency physician at Warm
Springs, is visiting with his wife and little son at
Chemawa.
Mr. F. R. Pendergrass arrived at Chemawa on Mon
day from Montana. Mr. Mitchell, who left a week
ago for Montana, returned with him.
The Junior class was busy writing a composition last
week on “ Preparing to Entertain the Seniors.” This
was a good topic for them and they surely succeeded
in their entertainm ent.
Mr. Freed, who has been employed at Chemawa for
some months in connection with the steam system,
ceased work on Sunday last. He will accept a position
in the paper mills at Oregon City.
A rthur Johnson made a splendid collection of ferns,
fir boughs and Oregon Grape from the woods on W ed
nesday, which greenery Miss Skipton used to decorate
the dining hall for the football banquet.
Plenty of good hard basketball games may be ex
pected from the girls this winter to judge from the
showing they are making at their regular practice each
day. It is probable that thev may form a basketball
league among themselves.
The vocal quartet composed of Irving Shepard,
Russell Adams, Frank Peratrovich and Clyde Fields,
rendered a special number at Sunday night services.
The number was entitled “ Keep the Home Fires
B urning.” We hope the quartet will favor us often.
Mr. Daly, teacher of agriculture, who made applica
tion for an officer’s commission in the Balloon Branch
of the Aviation Corps, was called to Seattle for exam
ination on Sunday. Mrs. Daly accompanied her hus
band as far as American Lake in order to spend a day
with her brother who is stationed there and who ex
pects to leave for “ somewhere in France” soon.
Chemawa students are receiving not a few excellent
talks and lectures this year on part of ministers and
other speakers from Salem. None have been more
enjoyed than the lecture given on Sunday evening by
Rev. Robert S. Gill, on the subject “ W hy We are at
W a r.” He handled his subject splendidly and held
the audieuce spellbound. The only regret was that
the time was all too short, as he was compelled to rush
back to Salem to meet another engagement later on in
the evening. We hope he will visit us often.
Mr. E. A. Smith, disciplinarian, and his wife, Mrs.
Lucy N. Sm ith, chief clerk, have received notice of
their transfer to like positions at the Cushman school at
Tacoma, W ashington. Both of these employes are
landm arks at Chemawa and will be missed in the
various activities of the school. Mr. Sm ith’s aged
parents reside near Tacoma aud this change will bring
him in closer touch, which he feels necessary as his
father has been in poor health for some time. Mrs.
Smith will be greatly missed as the head of the office
force. She is an untiring worker and altogether a
splendid woman and accountant of rare ability. Our
best wishes go with them and their little family.
