CH EM AW A SECOND TEAM —SILVERTON H IG H
T h e Chem aw a ’V arsity team played th e 4th E n g i
n eers’ team at th e B arracks a t V ancouver last S a tu r
day and in a h ard -fo u g h t gam e defeated them 6-4.
T h e E n g in eers were excep tio n ally big m en, o u t
w eighing C hem aw a about 15 p o unds per m an, m any
of whom w ere stars from E astern colleges.
C hem aw a kicked off to th e E n g in eers, w ho, on the
very first play, gained about 20 y ard s th ro u g h center,
but after a few plays C hem aw a played low er and held
th eir opponents on dow ns, ta k in g th e ball. T hen by
end ru n s, w ith C ham berlin and W a tts carry in g the
ball, and forw ard passes, the C hem aw a team took the
ball to th e E n g in e e rs’ 25-yard line, w here Reggie
D ow nie executed a beautiful d ro p kick for 3 points.
In th e n ex t q u arter a fau lty pass w hen Chem aw a
w as near h er own goal gave th e E n g in eers a safety
and tw o points. D ow nie kicked an o th er field goal in
the 3rd q u a rte r and a blocked kick netted th e E n g i
neers an o th er safety.
T h e C hem aw a men w ere o v er-an x io u s and were
penalized repeatedly for off-side, sta rtin g before th e
ball. Chem aw a successfully ex ecu ted m any forw ard
passes for g ain s of from 10 to 30 y ard s and made
m any g ain s on sh o rt end ru n s. T h e big stu m b lin g
block to C hem aw a was L arge, a C arlisle In d ian p lay
ing left end for th e E n g in eers.
A dam s, p lay in g his first gam e, th o u g h green at end,
did well and h is p u n tin g was good. C ham berlin and
W a tts played fine gam es and succeeded in break in g
u p nearly all th e E n g in e e rs’ forw ard passes. N u ck
olls successfully handled forw ard passes for good
g ain s. T h e line m en, co n sid erin g th e h an d icap of
w eight, did excellently, enabling the Chem aw a backs
to m ake several good g ain s th ro u g h the line. I t was
D ow nie’s toe w hich won th e gam e for C hem aw a, and
his h an d lin g of th e team and choice of plays was good,
also his end ru n n in g , ru n n in g back p u n ts, an d fo r
w ard passing.
All of the C hem aw a su p p o rters w ere pleased w ith
th e show ing of th e team and hope two stro n g team s
will be m et n e x t S atu rd ay an d T h an k sg iv in g . T h ere
has been stead y im provem ent since th e first of the
season and th e team will be stro n g er still w ith m ore
faith fu l practice, and is now in shape to play any of
the stro n g er team s of the W est.
T h e second team played th e Silverton H ig h School
football team on th e Chem aw a g ro u n d s last F riday
and defeated them 42-0. T h e team s w ere evenly
m atched in w eight, but the C hem aw a second team
was su p erior in every departm ent of th e gam e. T hey
w ere som ew hat nervous in the first q u a rte r, but after
th a t settled dow n and m ade tw o touchdow ns in each
q u a rte r th ereafter, from w hich Bob Downie kicked all
six goals.
ChemawTa ’s principal gains w ere m ade on forw ard
passes and w ide end ru n s. T h ey w ere m ore ag g res
sive, faster, and had m ore “ p ep ” th a n th eir oppon
en ts all th ro u g h the gam e. E very m an, ex cep tin g
th e first team m en, w ho had been o u t for practice
played a t least a p a rt of the gam e.
B ettles w as th e p rincipal g ro u n d -g a in er for C he
m awa, an d his end ru n n in g , forw ard passing and r u n
n in g th ro u g h an open field w ere excellent. Dow nie
and G artiez also played fine ball, as did Johnson after
the first q u a rte r. P h illip ’s passing at center was
good.
A ll th e boys played a d ash in g , sm ashing gam e,
ag ain st w hich th e Silverton boys w ere pow erless.
M anager Downie, after m any letters, telegram s and
phone m essages, has finally arranged a gam e between
th e C hem aw a team and the 91st D ivision team to be
played at C am p Lew is, A m erican L ake, n e x t S atu rd ay .
T h is arm y team is probably the best team in th e N o rth
w est and if o u r team can m ake a good show ing against
them th ey w ill m ake a nam e for them selves. T h is
team has won all its gam es excep tin g th a t w ith the
fam ous M arine team from M are Island, whom they
held to a low score, an d is com posed of fam ous college
players. T h e Chem aw a team is p racticing faithfully
and will give th e arm y team a stiff gam e.
P U P IL S ’ ITEMS
T h e girls are all busy these days, crocheting, k n it
tin g and ta ttin g . Few idle girls can be seen around
th e cam pus.
T h e e ig h th graders are glad to have D aniel O rton
back in school. H e has been suffering from a sprained
ankle and has been in th e hospital for some tim e.
