Salem Day. T h is is an annual event and a gala day
for th e C hem aw a stu d en ts.
M r. M itchell has ch arg e of th e d airy , and w ith the
assistance of Joe B ettles, is aro u sin g m uch in terest on
th e p a rt of th e d airy detail.

Since p ractically th e en tire big band has gone to
th e arm y an d n avy, C hem aw a’s Ju n io r Band is com ing
to th e fro n t an d is ta k in g th e place as o u r reg u lar
school ban d .
M iss H a ttie C leveland now occupies th e position of
a ssista n t cook in the stu d e n ts’ k itch en . Mrs. B rew er
speaks h ig h ly of h er w ork. H a ttie is a good cook
and is not afraid of w ork.
I t is a understo o d th a t th e R oseburg A gency h as
been abolished and th e d u ties heretofore devolving on
such agency have been tran sferred to the Siletz su p e r
in te n d e n t, W arm S p rin g s an d G reenville Scnool.
T h e im provem ents already m ade are a large coal
shed, a new floor in th e s tu d e n ts ’ d in in g hall, d ish
w ashing room and dish ery , an ad dition to th e em
p lo y es’ k itc h en and d in in g -ro o m , and a liberal-sized
la u n d ry for th e girls of M cBride H all. M any other
im provem ents are p lan n ed .

T h irty -fo u r acres in th e lake bottom have been plowed
and seeded to oats already. E ig h teen m ore acres
are being prepared in the lake to be used for onions,
cabbage, etc. A goodly num ber of acres of upland
have also been ploughed.
A t present the C hem aw a force of em ployes lacks a
su p e rin ten d en t of in d u stries, $1260; principal, $1470;
tw o teachers, $660; hospital cook, $528; b lacksm ith,
$880; and teacher of sew ing, $880. N one but w illing
and capable persons need apply.
Reggie Downie re tu rn e d to school early last week
and in ad dition to his p rin tin g duties will take charge
of all ath letics. H e is a rra n g in g gam es for basketball
as well as football. T h e football squads are practicin g
daily. A call is out for try -o u ts for a g irls ’ cham pion
basketball team .
On account of a large percentage of the hop fields
being ploughed up th is year th ere was not m uch d e
m and for hoppickers. O u r girls, how ever, about 75 of
them , did the picking in S enator M cN ary ’s hop yard
and earned a goodly sum . T h e S enator has em ployed
Chem aw a girls in his yard for years.
M r. D. G . M itchell, T re a su re r of R iverside C ounty,
C alifornia, an old friend of S u p e rin te n d e n t and M rs.
H all, called at C hem aw a on M onday. H e stopped off
on his re tu rn from th e E ast to his hom e in R iverside.
M r. M itchell is one of th e solid men of his com m unity
and th e fath er of M ajor H . E . M itchell of S herm an
In stitu te.
E ach S unday afternoon at 2:30 ch u rch services are
held, th e P ro te sta n ts m eeting in the auditorium w ith
one of the m inisters from Salem in charge, and C a
tholics in th e ir chapel w ith F a th e r G all in charge.
T h e Bible stu d y and religious in stru ctio n th is year
will take place on T h u rsd a y evening from 7 to 8, in
stead of on M onday n ig h ts as heretofore.
Since th e price of fuel oil rendered its use p ro h ib
itive we are b u rn in g coal, u sin g ab o u t fifteen tons a
d ay . T h is requires m uch w ork on p art of th e fire
m en. F ive hun d red cords of wood have been p u r
chased to use in event of u n ab ility to secure coal.
T h e pow er p lan t at C hem aw a, in c lu d in g th e lig h t,
pow-er, heat, w ater, and sew er is a source of m uch
expense, and on account of th e en tire school d ep e n d
in g upon it, any lack in an y of its functions affects the
school seriously, as has been d em o n strated frequently
th e past few m onths.
School opened on Septem ber 17th in all d epartm ents
w’ith nearly 500 pupils in actual atten d an ce, since
w’hich tim e the num ber has increased u n til the
dorm itories are all filled, especially th e g irls ’ who
o u tn u m b er the boys. T a k in g in to consideration
th a t 55 of our m ore p ro m in en t y o u n g m en e n list
ed in th e navy and arm y and m any o thers are
at w’o rk , th e enrollm ent th is year is especially fine.
T h e new pupils have come to C hem aw a to get the
best th a t th e school affords, w ith a determ ination it
w ould seem , to p u t in full tim e and en ergy to im prove.
T h e old stu d e n ts have buckled dow n to w ork w ith
th e usual interest and alto g eth er we look for splendid
resu lts th is year.
