On account of so m any of th e older boys en terin g
th e arm y and navy who w ere in the cast of th e o p er
e tta w hich w as to have been given in May, th e rehear -
sals have been postponed.
F rie n d s of M r. an d M rs. H e n ry D illstrom , now at
T o n g u e R iver, M ontana, w ill be shocked to learn th a t
th e y recently lost th e ir y o u n g est ch ild . T h e p aren ts

G arden clubs are b eing organized by th e girls.
T ra cts of lan d jo in in g th e cam pus are set aside for
th e different clubs and those clubs will p lan t and care
for all k in d s of vegetables.
R ev. M r. Seeley of P o rtlan d , was a visitor a t C h e
m aw a over S u n d ay an d addressed th e Y . M. C. A. at
th e reg u lar S u n d ay m eetiug and also gave a short a d
dress on p atrio tism to th e stu d e n t body at chapel.
T h e Sigm a P h i D eltas in itiated a num ber of new
m em bers in to th e ir society on S atu rd ay n ig h t and

afterw ards gave a tea to all th e m em bers. T h e new
m em bers are F lorence L indell, A nnie M iller, B ertha
G rim es and M arguerite C ham berlin.
G eorge P eters, w ho enlisted in the Signal Service,
was g ran ted a week or so leave before en terin g on
d u ty and has taken th e o p p o rtu n ity to visit his parents
in M ontana. Joe G ale who also enlisted in th e same
service, is v isitin g w ith his m other at T h e Dalles.
A m ovem ent is being in au g u rated by the Sigm a
P h i’s to organize a club of th e older girls to take up
in stru c tio n in first aid to th e in ju red as well as to
m ake bandages, com fort bags and other needed articles
for o u r boys w ho have enlisted in the navy and arm y.
A little farew ell was given a party of ten you n g
m en, w ho had enlisted in th e navy, and th e ir lady
frien d s by M r. and Mrs. Loos on T uesday n ig h t in the
parlors of M itchell H all. T h e decorations w ere in
flags artistically arranged. D electable refreshm ents
w ere served. G am es and conversation m ade th e eve
n in g pass quickly.
M r. and Mrs. S m ith en tertain ed several of the
navy boys at d in n e r at th e club on S unday. T h ey
also took th e boys on an autom obile trip over the
valley. M ost of these y o ung m en were our officers.
C hem aw a will m iss them . T hey left on M onday
m orning w ith half of th e school at th e depot to w ish
them God speed.
M rs. Brew er and Miss S kipton entertained the first
p arty of y o u n g m en w ho enlisted in the navy at a
dinnei in the stu d e n ts’ d in in g hall last w eek. I t was
splendidly appointed and nicely served. Several em
ploye guests were present. T h e decorations were flags
w ith a hu g e bunch of lively red and w hite carnations
in th e cen ter of th e table.
G arden and farm w ork is being interfered w ith on
account of th e rains. E very acre of th e school farm
th a t can be ploughed has been or will be seeded this
year. F o rty acres of potatoes will be p lanted. W ith
an average favorable season a yield of 8,000 bushels
should be secured. V arious trac ts of land never be
fore in cu ltivation have been ploughed and m ade
ready for p lan tin g .
T w en ty -six C hem aw a boys have enlisted in th e navy
and arm y and there are q u ite a num ber arran g in g to
go. On M onday seven left for P o rtlan d . W hile C he
mawa rejoices in th e fact th a t o u r boys have th e p a tri
otic sp irit and are answ ering to the N a tio n ’s call, the
school will be bereft of som e good stu d e n ts and the
b reak in the ran k s w ill be greatly felt. T h e inspec
tion officers state th a t our boys easily show superior
m arks of physical tra in in g over those applicants com
in g from the average com m unity.
T h e an n u al p arty of th e six th grade was given in
the gym on F riday evening last. T he m em bers of th is
class have the rig h t sp irit and are not lacking in effort.
T h e m an n er in w hich th e function was m anaged was
very com m endable, as there w as not a dull m om ent.
D u rin g th e e”enitig a program consisting of recita
tions, songs, etc., by th e class w ere given as well as a
num ber of sh o rt talks by the guests, com plim entary of
th e class. B ountiful refreshm ents w ere served. Miss
H odgson is th e teacher of th is grade.
