A card w hich has been received from A lex Beyers,
w ho left for F o rt Lapw ai a sh o rt w hile ago, tells us
th a t he is com pletely rested from his trip and is feeling
fine.
T h e beautiful su n n y days, such as we have been h a v
in g at C hem aw a for some tim e, is q u ite a change from
th e dam p m isty w eather gen erally experienced at th is
tim e of th e year.
A num ber of m em bers of th e C hem aw a basketball
team , accom panied by M r. S m ith and M r. H o.m ck et,
atte n d e d the W illam ette U niversity and O klahom a
N orm al gam e in Salem , T h u rsd ay evening.
T h e O klahom a ball team h um orously claim ed th at
th e ir defeat at th e h an d s of our team was due to the
excellen t food given them at the D om estic Science
D epartm ent. T hey w ere unable to keep w ithin tr a in
in g ru les, as e v e ry th in g tasted so good. Keep it up

H on. L. O. B elland, m em ber of the O regon L egis
la tu re from A storia, and M rs. Belland visited C hem a
wa on S atu rd ay . M r. Belland is m uch interested in
th e progress of th e A laskan In d ian s. F or the past
tw en ty sum m ers he has m ade trip s to A laskan points
and has been in stru m e n ta l in sending a goodly n u m
ber of pupils to th is school.
O ne of the vocational classes in Dom estic Science
gave a verv enjoyable faculty d in n e r recently. L am a
Squiqui and L aura T h e rria u lt acted as hostesses and
m ore g racious and dignified hostesses would be hard
to find. Sadie K now les and H elen S m ith did the
serving. T h e delicious d in n er was prepared by Mary
U nge, N ellie M etcalf, M arcella Silvers, M argaret H a r
ney, and A m elia N o rb ert. T h e fo rtu n a te guests were
Miss Scholder, M rs. P endergrass, M rs. C ulbertson,
Miss C a rtw rig h t, M rs. E vans, M r. and M rs. W oods,
M r. and M rs. S m ith. Miss T ay lo r and her girls are
to be co n g ratu lated upon th e success of th e din n er.
BASK ETBALL
Tw o h ard gam es of basketball were played on F r i
day and S aturday evenings in the school gym nasium ,
in w hich C hem aw a was the victor each tim e. T he
first gam e was w ith th e stro n g O klahom a q u in tet,
who were to u rin g th e west and it is said th is contest
w ith the C hem aw a team was th e ir 50th gam e since
leaving O klahom a, w inning forty-seven out of fifty.
O u r team , how ever, was too stro n g for them , as the
score indicates, 24 to 14. It was not a one-sided
gam e, for every point m ade on eith er side was earned
by consistent effort and good team w ork, although at
no tim e in th e gam e did it appear th a t Chem aw a
could lose, for th e hom e team took th e lead easily
from th e sta rt and added to it until the end. T h e
m anager spoke hig h ly of the good treatm en t received,
and said he did not m ind being defeated by such clean
sportsm en and th a t our team was easily the strongest
one th ey had yet en countered.
On S atu rd ay n ig h t th e gam e w ith P hilom ath Col
lege was also a hard one. T h e college team led off
w ith eig h t points before ou r boys got sta rted , but th e
first half ended w ith a tie of 10 to 10. T h e second
half was a different sto ry , for never, it w ould seem,
d id the C hem aw a team play faster and ex h ib it better
team w ork and soon increased th e lead. T h e gam e
ended w ith th e score in favor of C hem aw a of 28 to 18.
In both gam es the balcony and stage were crow ded
w ith visitors, pupils and em ployees, and th e songs
and yells and general ro oting w ere stro n g . T h e
school band was also present and added to the life of
the evening.
