Follow ing are a few of th e statistics m entioned in
T h e m eeting of th e E xcelsiors on Jan u ary 3rd was
an open business m eeting for th e reo rg an izatio n of
th e society, ow ing to th e election of new officers at
th e previous m eeting. A new program com m ittee
w as appointed and different m em bers w ere called on
for speeches. M r. W oods and M rs. E stahrook w ere

In 1912 less th a n 55,000 In d ian s could read and
w rite E n g lish . N ow th e n um ber is 75,000, 30 per cent
of th e w hole num b er.
T h e incom e of th e In d ian s from farm in g , stock rais
ing and o th er em ploym ent has increased in th e sam e
tim e from $22,000,000 to $28,000,000.
T h e num ber of In d ian s engaged in farm ing has in
creased from 29,216 in 1913 to 35,823.
T h e acreage cu ltiv ated in five y ears has increased
from 383,025 to 668,527.
T h e death rate p er 1000in 1915 was 30, lmt decreased
to 22 per cent in 1916.
In 1914 th ere w ere 2391 d eaths of ch ild ren under 3
vears of age. In 1916 th e n u m b er was only 1303.
F o u r years ago 160,000 In d ia n s had abandoned tribal
custom s. In th e last four years 30,000 m ore have
visitors.

line to the S u p e rin te n d e n t’s residence. It is in tended

and from thence to M cBride H all.

ten School, says the therm om eter showed 32 degrees
below zero a few days since. H e w rites th a t he took
a sleigh ride across a portion of D evil’s L ake, a distance
of ten m iles, on ice over four feet in th ick n ess. T h e
Colonel is a m an of action and is not d eterred by cold
w eather or o th e r obstacles w hen he has w ork to do.
