T h e Silverton H igh School basketball team were
entertain ed in the dom estic science b u ild in g upon
th e ir visit here.
A large crow d of our girls visited Salem on S a tu r­
day to do th e ir C hristm as sh o p p in g , chaperoned by
M rs. San Brace.
M r. M itchell and a force of boys are saw ing and
sp littin g tim ber into cord wocd for the school, th u s
also clearin g th e land know n as the hog lot.
T h e hospital steam and hot w ater system has ju st
had a com plete renovation, w hich will not only enable
b etter service to be had but also render a g reat saving
in fuel.
A noticeable im provem ent is apparent in th e co n d i­
tion of th e room s and dorm itories of Brewer and
W inona H alls, as g ath ered d u rin g th e S unday m o rn ­
ing inspection.
G rade th ree in the academ ic d epartm ent has three
representativ es on the honor roll. T hey are, H ow ard
B erry, M ike Duvol and Roderic Jackson— all m ade 90
percent or better.
Dr. G . M. D ickason field d en tist, who spent several
m on th s at C hem aw a, left last week for Siletz, w here
he will exam ine the teeth of the day school pupils of
th a t reservation.
M r. T hom as Jackson, of the Siletz reservation, was
a visitor on Sunday last. H e came to C hem aw a to
arran g e for th e en tran ce of his tw o sons as well as to
see his d au g h ter, E sth er, who is a pupil.
M r. A. V . Brace, p ro p erty clerk, has been q u ite
busy of late, in addition to his reg u lar w ork at school,
in sp ectin g lum ber and other supplies for th e Indian
service, at P o rtlan d and other places.
T h e school gym nasium is the center of all athletic

and social activities of the stu d en t body. W ith bas­
ketball practice for both sexes, folk dancing, g y m n as­
tics generally, as well as m ilitary drills and social
functions, it is seldom idle outside of classroom hours.
C hester Bravo says th at he expects th e B rew er H all
boys will take m ore interest in their room s now and try
to keep them in better condition since S u p erin ten d e n t
H all, or his represenative, will m ake a sem i-dailv in ­
spection.
'I'he g irls’ detail changed on T uesday th ro u g h o u t the
school. T h e system has been so well prefected th a t
the change is m ade w ithout any com m otion. On M on­
day the boys will change.
A t the chapel exercises Sunday evening the orches­
tra gave a pleasing num ber and Russell A dam s favored
th e school w ith a vocal solo. S u p t. H all gave a stro n g
talk to the stu d e n t body and faculty in regard to
boosting for Chem aw a.
N otice has ju st been received of th e ap p o in tm en t of
R ichard E . Daly, of Pierre, South D akota, to th e posi­
tion of teacher of ag ricu ltu re at th is school. M r. Daly
comes well recom m ended as a capable farm er and a
“ live w ire ” generally.
It is a pleasure to w itness the joy derived by the
g irls in W inona H ail in the use of rocking chairs ju st
placed in th eir sittin g room . Its a p retty sight to see
th e chairs filled w ith older girls w ith sm allers one in
th e laps rocking and m othering them .
A1 cu t 160 of the younger boys and girls assembled
in the school gym nasium on S aturday evening for a
social period of tw o hours, under direction of Mr. and
M rs. Loos and Miss Scholder. A general good tim e
was had by the you n g er stud en ts, and am ong other
events enjoyed, the folk d ancing as was ta u g h t them
bv M r. S m ith. B row n’s orchestra furnished m usic
for the occasion. T hese young people will have th e ir
social hereafter once each m onth.
T h e m asonry and engineer details have had th eir
hands full lately excavating a trench 12 feet deep from
the fuel oil concrete reservoir in the rear of the cam pus
to the sewer near Brewer H all, in w hich they laid
ag ricu ltu ral drain p ip in g for purpose of pro tectin g the
reservoir from the w ater w hich accum ulates in the
soil, 'fh e 25.000 gallon iron tank heretofore used
was crushed in last year through the power of the
w ater and was actually lifted out of the earth several
feet and ru in ed . T h e use of the drain tile will carry
off all w ater and th u s prevent any outside pressure on
the new concrete reservoir. T he best advice has been
secured and a drain necessitating a lot of w ork on the
part of th e young men com posing th e mason and e n ­
g in eer details has been put in.
