W ork on th e ad dition to th e school auditorium is
progressing, alth o u g h unavoidable delay has been oc
casioned th ro u g h in ab ility to secure cars for tra n s
portation of m aterials.
M rs. V itina F arro w of A dam s, O regon, w as a visi
to r at Chem aw a last w eek. She enrolled her son Jesse,
and will retu rn and re-enroll in a short tim e her son,
R alph F arrow , w ho was a stu d en t a few years ago.
H o n . W . C. H aw ley, rep resen tativ e in C ongress
from th is d istrict, m ade a visit to Chem aw a on S a tu r
day last, and w hile here m ade a close inspection of
th e school. M r. H aw ley is a good friend of Chem aw a.
Dewey T albot retu rn ed from Clallam Bay on the
24th b rin g in g w ith him a new pupil, Isaac M ike.
Dewey reports th a t his b ro th er “ T a lly ” will be back
soon to atten d th e C apital Business College in Salem .

A good m any heatin g stoves have been p u t up in
th e p u p ils ’ quarters and school room s. T h is is re n
dered necessary on account of the poor condition of
th e steam system , w hich, how ever it is hoped to have
rem edied soon.

T ru -B lu cookies and w afers w as given in the trad in g
store S atu rd ay . T h e dem onstration counter was
crow ded m ost of the day, em ployees and families and
the stu d e n ts being served.
O u r supervisor, Col. O tis B. G oodall, has been
called out of his d istric t to tak e tem porary charge of
the F o rt T o tten School, N o rth D akota. W e hope he
will be relieved soon and th a t his official duties will
call him to this part of th e d istric t.
A C om m ittee com posed of prom inent citizens of Sa
lem , rep resen tin g th e Com m ercial Club, visited C he
m awa on F rid ay last w ith th e view of looking into
the needs of the school and presen tin g sam e to the
O regon delegation in C ongress for action.
F all p lo u g h in g is well underw ay. T h e hay ground
of fifty acres has been seeded by the farm force, and
the g ard en detail is p rep arin g the ground for about
six ty acres of garden tru c k . N ex t to be ploughed is
th e g rain and corn land. P ru n in g th e loganberries
and blackberries as well as su c k erin g and trim m in g
th e straw berries is well u n d er w av.
Clean speech, clean lives, clean athletics, coupled
w ith an honest purpose, is th e slogan of the boys.
At th eir “ discipline” rally S unday evening m any
speeches were made u rg in g w illing com pliance w ith
all schools rules, and the desirabilitv of tak in g a d
v antage of every facility at C hem aw a in securing an
education. A num ber of good, stro n g speeches were
m ade by the young m en. T h e sp irit at Chem aw a is
fine.
M rs. Sm ith entertained a few friends inform ally, but
d elig h tfu lly , last S aturday evening after the social.
A fter th e guests had gath ered they were let
into the secret th a t th e occasion was in honor
of M r. S m ith ’s b irth d ay . T h e evening was spent in
story telling and congenial c h a tte r. Delectable re
freshm ents consisting of tam ales, sandw iches, coffee,
cake and ice-cream were served. A fter show ering Mr.
S m ith w ith co n g ratu latio n s and good w ishes the guests
d ep arted , having spent a m ost enjoyable evening.
T h e 8th grade pupils are p rep arin g to give an e n
tertain m en t to usher in th e C hristm as holiday season.
