F rid a y was “ M iddy D ay ’’ at th e Salem H igh School.
Elw ood T ow ner, N ick Orloff and F ra n k Johnson
looked very fetch in g w ith th e ir m iddies and b rig h t
colored ribbons.
A bout 125 sacks of dried p ru n es w ere tu rn ed over

T h e school choir of 30 voices ju s t recently organized
u n d er th e leadership of M rs. M cCrossen favored the
school w ith a selection at S unday evening chapel and
le t th e general sin g in g . T h e voices blended well and
th e harm ony was good.
R u th M cN ickol en tertain ed a few of her friends
last week in her roctn in M cBride H all in honor of
th e b irth d ay s of E lizabeth M urray and Sadie K now les.
A delicious cake, w hich was baked bv the hostess,
as well as o th er refresh m ?n ts were served.
David B illings, a g rad u ate of Chem aw a, ’14, s u r
prised his friends by d ro p p in g in one n ig h t last week.
H e only rem ained over n ig h t, how ever. David is a
mail carrier and has a ro u te of 103 miles. H e was on
his way home from P o rtlan d , w here he had been b u y
ing hoi.'-es ft r his ro u te.

W h at a fine lot of boys and girls compose the s tu
d en t body at Chem aw a, and splendidly do they take
up th eir tra in in g in all activities. Surely w ith such
sp irit displayed there will be no failures this year.
Such u n anim ous rig h t-d o in g is certainly infectious.
Mr. S m ith, our physical director, is a busy man
these days giving both boys and girls daily physical
cu ltu re d rills in the gym nasium in addition to his
other duties. T he “ g y m ” is supplied w ith all k inds
of athletic equipm ent and used w ith m uch satisfaction
by all. Ju st w atch the bearing of our pupils and
notice how they carry them selves.
Classes of prevocational girls have been detailed for
in stru c tio n in the dom estic science cookery d ep atrm en t.
T w elve girls from the academ ic divisions will report for
d u ty at th e close of th e academ ic session, for one week
each m o nth, th u s g iv in g six g irls each day th is fine o p
p o rtu n ity . T hese girls will prepare and serve th e eve
n in g meal, under th e in stru ctio n of Miss T aylor.
Ju st take a stroll th ro u g h the passagew ays in the
school “ ro o t” house and view the tons of pu m p k in s,
squash, apples, onions, ru tab ag as, etc., stored in the
bins for w inter use. T h e celery and cabbages are
still in th e g ro u n d . T hen visit the fru it room a d jo in
ing the school kitchen and see the thousands of g a l
lons of all kinds of canned fru its and vegetables.
Indeed, Chem aw a provides ab u n d an tly for its table.
FOOTBALL NOTES

C aptain L ane was slightiy injured d u rin g the end of
th e third q u arte r, but retu rn ed to the gam e at b eg in
n in g of th e fourth q u arte r.
T he boys at school met the football team at th e
O regon-E lectric station on th eir re tu rn from F orest
G rove and gave them a royal reception.
M artin Colby accidentally cu t his ear badly on F r i
day ju st previous to the gam e and it had to be sowed
up, b u t it did not seem to in terfere at all w ith his
playing S atu rd ay .

team , who were unable to play S aturday on account
of sickness and in ju ry , atten d ed the W illam ette-M t.
A ngel gam e at Salem on S aturday.
In the F orest G rove gam e our team was penalized
for off-side and holding four or five tim es w hile the
Pacific U niversity was penalized but once, and th at at
the very close of the gam e. O ur boys feel th a t the
um pire was very partial tow ard Pacific in his decisions.
