In yo u r literary w ork, both in classroom and soci
ety, do not halt at th e disageeable point. C onsider
th a t th e exercise develops y o u r m ental pow ers as th e
d rill develops the m uscle, and vou will soon find y o u r
your task s easier and y o u r progress g reater. T ak e an

S ix ty new bureaus were d istrib u ted in th e various
room s of th e p u p ils’ q u arte rs S atu rd ay afternoon by
th e p ro p erty clerk, M r. Brace.
G ro u n d has been broken tor a m acadam road to
connect th e main road in fro n t of th e cam pus w ith
th e one in th e rear of the shops.
A 20-horse pow er tractio n engine boiler has been
secured to supply steam for the lau n d ry tem porarily.
T h is is m ade necessary on account of two of th e school
boilers being out of com m ission.
S u p erin ten d en t H all gave a very forceful talk at
S unday night chapel on the individual responsibility of
th e stu d e n ts and the far-reach in g effects of carelessness.
Miss W elsh from P o rtlan d and M rs. Seviens from
Silverton visited C hem aw a S a tu rd a y . T h ey were d e
lig h ted w ith th e school and are p lan n in g to come
back again soon.
M rs. Brewer retu rn ed from her n orthern trip on
S u n d ay last. She m et w iih a w arm w elcome from
all. A bout eighty-five pupils w ere enrolled th ro u g h
Mrs. B rew er’s efforts.
Petroleum B arrett, a form er C hem aw a stu d e n t,
spent last w eek-end w ith his b ro th er G eorge. H e
left m onday for P o rtlan d w here he will take a good
position in a large m achine shop.

Miss R uth Brew er and Mr. L oulin Brew er entered
th e O regon A g ric u ltu ra l College at C orvallis th is year.
Both of these estim able y o u n g people are g rad u ates of
C hem aw a, and afterw ards g rad u ated from th e Salem
H ig h School.
An attra ctiv e booklet co n tain in g C hem aw a songs
and yells is now being printed in th e A m erican office.
T h e stu d e n t body is fo rtu n ate in having the P resident
in th e p rin tin g office, as he is com piling old favorites
and ad d in g th e new ones.
N ick Orloff, our yell leader, requests th at ev ery
body keep th eir eyes on him from th e tim e he gives
th e signals for yells or songs u n til finished. It is the
only m ethod by w hich th e stu d e n t body can ren d er
th eir yells or songs in unison and effectively.
Miss S arah Brew er, our efficient and w ide-aw ake
ste n o g ra p h er and assista n t clerk in th e S u p e rin te n
d e n t’s office, devotes an h o u r each n ig h t d u rin g stu d y
ho u r teaching a class of pupils in stenography who
are especially anxious to learn . All are ta k in g m uch
interest.
M r. S m ith has received a le tte r from Joseph D u n
bar, one of C hem aw a’s g rad u ates. A t present he is
located in C leveland, O hio, w here he is em ployed by
the M axw ell A utom obile C om pany. Joseph was one
of o u r all-round ath letes and sen d s best w ishes to our
football team for a successful season.
M r. W illiam J . W arn er, of C ornell U niversity, will
tak e u p th e coaching of the C hem aw a football team s
for the rest of th e season. M r. W arn er is one of the
best coaches in A m erica. H e will be ably assisted by
M r. R uben S anders w ho has had the team in train in g
up to the present tim e and has done good w ork.
