arouse am bition and effort on th e part of our stu d e n ts
w hat a saving it w ould be in th e tim e and energy of
both stu d en ts and teachers. V acation is past and to
all a fresh o p p o rtu n ity is open, one in w hich you can
not only m ake g reat headw ay, b u t in w hich you can in
a large m easure m ake up for past failures. “ How ?”
you ask. Sim ply bv ta k in g hold now and p u ttin g
your h eart into y o u r w ork. G ive yo u r undivided in
terest to every task assigned to you and find in it an
o p p o rtu n ity for advancem ent w hether it is exactly
pleasant to you or not.
T h ere are no lines of learn in g in w hich we find
everything to onr lik in g , and usually the hardest
work b rings the g reatest gain . T herefore, do not
wait one day to plunge in; for ju st so long as you w ait,
ju st so far will you get behind. Some of you will
rem em ber w ith hu m iliatio n the resu lts of w aiting last
year— the difficult lessons at th e last and then the
failures in final exam inations.
All th a t can be avoided if you m ake the most of
every day as it passes. T h is applies to in d u strial
work as well as academ ic.
As you know , even
greater im portance will be placed upon in d u stries
this year than e \e r before, and it will require more
interest and effort to com plete the course creditably.
Best of all, put the two to g eth er and make one branch
of work help in the o th er. W ithout both y o u r ed u ca
tion will not be com plete.
T ry to study to th e best advantage. In order to do
all th is you will have to be w ide-aw ake, full o fe n e rg v ,
and w illing. T h e latter especially is necessary; for
the teacher may do his or h er p a rt—yes, m ore—but
unless you have a w illing, cheerful spirit the effort is
lost. T h is has often been throw n at you before, b u t
it is w orth rep etitio n .
You do th e learn in g , as w ith o u t your effort and
co-operation the teacher can do n o thing. Do not w ait
to be w ound u p like a clock and set going, b u t I e
ready and w illing to en ter into yo u r lessons w ith a
spirit of w anting to learn for the sake of your own
advancem ent, and not because you m ust, or because
you r teacher is an x io u s to have you do it. R em em
ber th at the school is for you and the sooner you get
iu and dig the sooner you will reach th e top.
W H AT W IL L YOU MAKE IT?
A nother year of school has begun. W hat are you
Chemavva stu d en ts going to do w ith it and its o p p o r
tunities? G reat stress will be brought to bear upon
you to have you com plete the outlined courses of study
for the year. But th ere are m any w orthy th in g s, boys
and girls, that you can do w hich are not outlined in
the specified school courses. Now is the tim e when
vou can form many pleasant associations w hich will
mean m uch to you in later years. Good fellow ship
should prevail am ong the stu d en ts, th u s m aking your
school life as joyful as possible.
Y our interest in all school activities—the literary so
cieties, the d ebating and class contests, all branches
of athletics, the musical organization, and the social
life of the school— is very necessary in the ro u n d in g
out of a m anly or w om anly character. M oreover,
the most im p o rtan t th in g for you to bear in m ind is
th e fact th a t it is d u rin g these school days th at vour
ch aracter for life is being form ed. W hat will be your
object d u rin g th is course? W ill it be to cultivate a
tru e , strong, physical, m ental and m oral m anhood
and w om anhood, so th a t you can go out into the
w orld and face its battles w ith a tru e front? O r will
you lend y o u r energies to the w ork of becom ing
skilled in cu n n in g , deceit, and treachery, to go out
w ith a preparation for “ bluffing,” w hich, how ever
bold and im posing it may appear, can never b rin g
you success?
It rem ains for you to recognize the countless ben e
fits to be derived fr< m your school life at Chem aw a
and to seek to stren g th en th is link in your chain of
stu d e n t years th a t it may be one of great durability
and usefulness.
