In spite of the inclem ency of th e late w eather w ork on our new lava-
tory b u ild in g is progressing nicely.
N ot long ago Mrs. Loos chaperoned a few small boys to P o rtland,
w here they purchased for them selves some clo th in g and had the tim e
of th eir lives.
M rs. C lark changed her m ind about going to M arshfield, O r., as we
reported in our last issue. Instead she once again in charge of th e
culinary d ep artm en t of the em ployees’ M ess.’
Supervisor A sbury was here in Chem aw a for a few day recently a t­
ten d in g to some special business. H e has had 23 years experience in
th e service and proved him self both a capable and likeable m an.
Not long ago M r. Van Tassel purchased a very fine old violin for his
d au g h ter, Miss R u th , who is becom ing quite proficient in h an d lin g th e
bow. She is very proud of her in stru m e n t— and well she may be.
On M arch 16th it was reported from Siletz reservation, O regon, that
there had been no violations of th e liquor reg u latio n s of th e Indian
Service since Jan u ary 1, 1916, w hen state-w ide prohibition became
effective in O regon.
A t present our academic teaching staff has two tem porary teachers.
Mrs. S chillerstrom ’s grades have been taken in charge by Miss E thel
G . Reed, w hile the position held by Mrs. H utchison is now being filled
by Mr. Joseph M inton. Both of the new teachers are residents of
Salem .
D uring th e fore p art of A pril we were visited by C larence W hite
E agle, who is w alking a race ag ain st tw o w hite m en. T h e trio left
Chicago to w alk to th e Pacific Coast and back to C hicago. W hite
E agle is a Com anche from O klahom a. H e had a big lead on th e w hite
men w hen he was at Chem aw a.
T h e boys of th e Seabeck Club have l)een very active of late in the m atter
of raising funds for delegates to th e Y . M .C. A . Conference of the Pacific
N orthw est to be held at Seabeck, W ash ., from Ju n e 9th to 19th.
T here is m uch enthusiasm am ong th e boys and lots of evidence of u n ­
selfish w ork am ong them in the endeavor to have a strong rep resen ta­
tion of delegates at th e conference. In th e way raising funds the m ost
successful ven tu re w as a supper given at 25 cents a plate. T h ere were
228 p atro n s— away in excess of the m ost sanguine expectations. In
every way the supper was a splendid success. W e have been asked by
the Y . M. C. A. boys to voice th eir th a n k s to all w ho so freely p a tro n ­
ized them on th is occasion, and to especially th an k Mrs. Brewer and
Miss S kipton for th eir efforts, and real labor, w ith o u t w hich nothing
could have been accom plished. T h e boys are all rejoiced over their
success on th is occasion, and they have a rig h t to feel elated.
