THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN
5
McClusky, captain and guard; Marian Minugh and Dorothy Talbot,
guards, Alice Keeley, center; Rose O’Brien and Rose Simmons, for
wards; and Mary Lester and Marie Shaishnikoff, spares.
The real pride of Chemawa was its big team. In spite of the heavy
schedule, the wearers of the Red and White won an overwhelming
majority of the games. Fourteen games were scheduled with strong, ag
gressive teams, and of these ten were won, while four only were lost.
Had it not been for the fact that the boys began practicing rather late in
the season, Chemawa would have had a clean slate this year, as practi
cally all the coaches of the opposing teams agreed that Chemawa’s basket
ball team was probably the strongest quintet in the Northwest. Among
the teams defeated by Chemawa were teams who have won national
fame in former years. Thus, Chemawa defeated the famous Dallas Team
of Oregon which, for four years held the undisputed national champi
onship in basketball. One of the most gratifying features was the sports
manlike and clean style of playing that was adhered to by Chemawa
this year. Everywhere the team went the manager was told by the cap
tains and managers of the other teams that no other quintet exhibited as
clean a game as was played by Chemawa. It to be hoped that Chemawa
will continue playing clean games.
The following men made Chemawa’s first team: Reginald Downie,
Russel Adams, forwards; Henry Burd, center; Frank Chamberlain,
captain and guard; James O. Kennedy, guard; Aurelius Talbot, Martin
Colby and Frank Peratrovich, spares.
At the end of the basketball season the boys held a meeting at which
Henry C. Burd was elected captain for next year. A better choice
could not have been made and the school is to be congratulated upon
being represented in basketball by Burd. For the lovers of statistics,
the following record of games played by Chemawa is appended hereto:
