RESUME OF THE BASKETBALL SEASON

N March 3, Chemawa completed one of its most suc
cessful basketball seasons. During that season five
teams were put into the field and each team gave a
very good account of itself. For the first time in
Chemawa's history, an attempt was made to get. the
“ little fellows” interested in basketball. A team
known as “ The Midgets” was organized. The boys
who made up this team weighed less than eighty pounds. Unfortunate
ly, it was impossible to obtain any games for that team, owing chiefly
to the fact that no other school around Salem had such a team, and
that Chemawa’s work on that team was started rather late. A game
was finally arranged between “ The Midgets” and the second team of
the Grant Junior High School of Salem, Oregon. In spite of the fact
that the Salemites were much taller and heavier than our boys, Che
mawa’s “ little fellows” trounced their opponents by the score of 21 to
17.
Our juniors brought much credit to the school by winning 50 per cent
of the games played. This team was made up of boys weighing not
more than 125 pounds and was composed of the following men: Robert
Downie, captain and forward; Joe Bittles, forward; Arthur Johnson,
center; Willie Brown, guard; James Todd, guard; Alphus Norwest, spare.
Our second team can claim a great deal of the success achieved by
the first team. It was the good work of these boys during practice
games which enabled the first team to develop speed and accuracy in
guarding and shooting baskets. Five games were scheduled for the
second team, of which three were lost and two won. The make-up of
the second team was as follows:
John Johnson, captain and forward; Martin Colby, forward; Jack
Pablo, center; Aurelius Talbot and Frank Peratrovich, guards; John V.
Adams, spare.
The basketball team of the girls played inter-collegiate basketball for
the first time in many yeaas. In spite of the fact that only two of the
girls had played basketball before, we were able to put forth a fairly
good team. As the season progressed, it became evident that our girls
were going to have a very good team. Four games were played this
year, and it is hoped that next years’ schedule will include more games
for the girls. Our girls were beaten by the Silverton High School twice,
but came back strongly by defeating twice the girls of the Independence
