the s tu d e n ts’ kitch en . A great im provem ent has been made in the a p
pearance of th e kitch en .
In every direction there is evidence of “ hustle and b u stle” in carry in g
on the spring w o rk —plow ing and sow ing, g ard en in g , cultivation of
be-ry p itch es and o rch ard s, ecc. T nese are b u s / d i/s for all.
Sawing and sp littin g wood in the lot east of th e hospital continues to
serve as a m uscle-developer for a num ber of our boys. H ow ever, to
their credit, we hear th at they do not dislike the w ork; in fact, they
seem to enjoy it as the report goes.
Simon b ratis and his m other arrived at Chem aw a on M arch the 15th
tor a visit at the school. At present they are living in M arshfield, O re
gon, and Simon has a good position there as a florist and reports that
he is g ettin g along nicely.
Mr. W oods is am ong those Chem aw a people who have purchased an
auto. Ju st wait until the good old sum m er tim e arrives! We believe
Mr. W oods’ th o u g h ts run thus, an 1 we do not in the least b la n e him .
H e has an O verland car.
David F orsm an, one of our pupils, had a pretty close call recently
when he figured in a runaw ay w ith a four-horse team . T he team got
from under his control and he wras throw n violently to the ground and
suffered a fracture of the skull in addition to bruises on various parts
of his bodv.

front of the office b u ild in g to see if it would m anage to bloom this year.
As a general th in g it has blossomed early in M arch in past years, but at
the tim e of w riting this we are not certain w hether or not it will not
observe leap year. W e believe th at the severe w inter w hich we have
ju st experienced has been responsible for th e uncertain state of our pet
tree.
Mrs. Brace has made a great success of her work as librarian at C he
mawa and her efforts have been recognized, not only at home, but
abroad as well. S u p t. \V adsw orth assures us th at she has been chosen
to teach
L ibrary M ethods” d u rin g the com ing series of in stitu tes
which the Indian D epartm ent will hold this sum m er. F irst, as we u n
derstand it, she will go to H askell and in stru ct one of the teachers there,
who after the instruction will teach the m ethods at the various eastern
institu tes, w hile Mrs. Brace will retu rn west and teach d u rin g the in sti
tutes of the w estern circuit. W hen Dr. B uchanan was here recently he
said our library was splendid and th at pupils and em ployes were making'
better use of it, so far as he knew’, than was being made at any other
school in the service.
