T seems th a t at last the Indian is com ing to u n d er,
stand th e tru th of the sa y in g —by th e sw eat of thy
brow thou shall eat bread, and are ta k in g hold of
th eir farm w ork th is season with a vim and energy
th a t is astonishing to th e w hite brethren who have
know n th e red man m ainly for his laziness. It is
indeed su rp risin g to one to get out for a day and
cover as m uch of th e valley as possible to see ju st w hat they have ac
com plished in th e brief tim e since sp rin g opened.
To get the In d ian s on a self-supporting footing is the end tow ard
w hich the G overnm ent officials and em ployees in th e Service are now
w orking. H eretofore eith er because of lax and inefficient ad m in istra
tion of affairs or the lack of necessary incentive, but few of them have
made m ore than a desultory, half-hearted attem p t at farm ing and a
scatterin g few have gone into stock raisin g on a small scale, and as to
actually earn in g a living on an allotm ent, those who attain ed th is state
of civilization could be counted on the fingers of one hand. T he
allotted Indian land com prises nearly all of the farm ing land in the Pine
River Valley and for this to lie in w aste has been sham eful. So the
change is surely a welcome one.
More th a n 700 acres of new land have been cleared and put into v ari
ous crops, nearly double the acreage farm ed previously; 1,500 acres
have been fenced and 400 acres more will be fenced th is sum m er and
fall; several new houses have l>een b u ilt, and m any o th er im provem ents
are u n d er way.
T h e total acreage in crops farmed bv the S outhern U tes this year
run s well tow ards 2,000 acres and th e alfalfa, w heat, oats, beans, and
potatoes grow ing thereon look well indeed, considering the haphazard
jy ste m th a t has ruled previously.
