On Jan u ary 20th Mrs. Brewer was called to T acom a, W ash ., on b u si
ness. She was absent several days looking after p ro p erty in terests, etc.
T h e m em bers of th e Y. M. C. A . and Y. W . C. A. enjoyed a pleas
ant social in W inona H all on th e evening of Jan . 31st. G am es and
refreshm ents kept them busy u n til a late hour.
D uring th e past m onth both Dr. F rach ten b erg and Mr. Loos had b u si
ness th at took them to G rand R onde. T h e ir trip s were both m ade d u r
ing one of the w orst storm s of the year
W e did not envy them th eir
trip s by a long shot. H ow ever, neither of these gentlem en suffered any
ill effects from the severity of th eir trips.
T h e unusual severity of the w eather d u rin g the past m onth or tw o is
certain to sound the knell of lots of stock in O regon. A lready there is
a m uch stro n g er bid for feed— hay and g ra in —than was anticipated
and prices are going up as the dem and grow s stro n g er. T h e w eather
will have hit m any a stock-ow ner a hard blow financially, to say n o th
ing of the suffering of the stock, before feed is again grow ing in the
fields.
On Ja n u ary 18th Mrs. Teabo arrived at Chem aw a from her hom e in
G rand R onde. L ittle D onna May Sm ith has been the victim of som e
th in g akin to grippe of late and Mrs. Teabo has been looking after her,
as the school d u ties of both her father and m other made it im possible
for them to give th e child the atten tio n w hich her p arents felt th at she
should have. Many old-tim e friends were glad to again see Mrs. T ea
bo at the school w here she passed so m any years of her life, both as a
stu d en t and an em ploye.
D uring the period of snow th ere was a com m endable effort in nearly
every part of the state to save the birds. To the credit of our stu d en ts,
to say n o th in g of the su p p o rt of th e em ployes, m uch atten tio n was given
“ our feathered frie n d s.” It seemed a real pleasure to the young people
to do all they could for th e birds. It alm ost seemed in some instances
th a t the birds were conscious of the efforts made in th eir behalf, for they
got about as tam e as chickens. Miss Skipton had a few in the big d in
ing-room of the stu d en ts T h e littleso n g esters seems rig h t at home there
and lucky they were, too. Some of the boys fed th e birds from the
sills of their windows and we know of them reaching out the windows
and catch in g them , b u t liberating them in due season. A nother instance
th at may be cited of th e kindness to th e birds on the part of the boys is
of a bird th at had its feet p artly frozen. It was caught and m ade at home
in a b o y ’s cap over n ig h t. N ext m o rn in g it seemed to be all rig h t and
was liberated. All of th is was pleasing to us.
